Does anyone know a lightweight app that will maintain gps lock when the phone is locked?

I need for google maps to be almost instantaneous when opened. It takes a good 15-30 secs from standby to get location.

I can run a background app like sports tracker and this achieves the purpose as gps lock is maintained when the phone is in standby. However, it tends to be a fairly battery intensive app due to the constant data recording.

Can anyone else suggest another app that runs in the background and would achieve this?

Latitude is a possibility, but Id prefer a more private solution

GPS by itself will eat your battery - even without data. Have you got A-GPS turned on?

Yep, a-g is turned on. When I look at the battery / cpu time taken up by sports tracker in addition to gps. Its quite gps AND data intensive

Im really just after a lightweight app that polls gps every x minutes to keep it awake I think...I believe theres sufficient battery for the purpose

I know "speedHUD" will run in the background but i'm not sure how much power it will use...
I'm still thinking "tasker" could turn you gps on every 5 secs or so....

Testing gpslogger - quite configurable for time / distance polling.
Its promoted as 'light weight' and keeps a good log of location. Ill have to see how the battery goes ....
