Hi guys,

I have a friend who owns a brand new HTC EVO 3D on Vodafone Australia.

She, at the moment, is waiting for her new connection to activate. In the meantime, she is using pocket wifi to connect to the net.

The problem is, when she first starts the phone, she is unable to log in when asked for her Gmail account. the message reads:
"Cant establish a reliable data connection to the server".

So she skips this step during set up.

The funny thing is, she can browse the web on her phone fine, however, none of her apps would connect to the net, such as Facebook. When trying to add a Google account in "Account & Sync", she is presented with the same message:
"Cant establish a reliable data connection to the server".

Her Gmail password is correct and there is no input error.

Did a factory reset and still no luck.

Any ideas? I own a HTC DHD and never came across such issues. According to the web, there is a lot of people with the same problem.

Do you guys have a solution that doesn't require rooting the phone? Does the phone need to connect to the network first via 3G before it allows you to use wifi connection? Surely not?!

UPDATE: when putting her active "3" SIM in, she is able to sign-in via wifi. Does this mean you need an active SIM to sign-in for the first time? Confused!

OK the finding: you can only log into your Google account - for the first time - when you have an active SIM and 3G connection (wifi won't do it).

I didn't know Android had such a requirement?

That's because, for security reasons, if you change your SIM the account password is removed from the device. You need a SIM to establish the identity.

It appears to. I had the same issue with my LG Optimus 3D and other phones recently.

I think the idea is that it connects the IMEI / SIM / phone (one or all of them) to the account..and it can't access it via wifi...if that makes any sense.

[UPDATE: Just saw your post, Mauricio. Yeah...that. :-)  ]
