okay, i want to learn to write my own android app. i dont have any basic in programming but i am a fast learner. is there any online courses? i dont have time to go back to college/university again - this will be part time aside from my daily job. i should have 4-5 hours to spare weekly. i dont mind spending money if the course is excellent. any recommendations?

I haven't really looked into android but a friend of mine borrowed this book off me,
http://www.amazon.com/Java-Foundations-Introduction-Program-Structures/dp/0321429729,
to learn how to write android programs. So I am assuming you write them in Java so it might be a good place to start.

I did 1 year of java programming 5 years ago at university (stage 1 computer science). Since then I have done no java programing (though I have still been programming but using matlab and other "mathsie" languages). So I am very rusty with my java programming.

I got this book here: http://www.amazon.com/Beginning-Android-Application-Development-Programmer/dp/1118017110 and I've found it extremely good.

I don't think you could read it immetiately having no programming background, but after you've learnt the absolute basics of java then I think it would be read-able.

id recommend making some ROMs first it gives you a good base to move onto apps

Yes I have used app inventor. It is a good introduction as it uses building blocks to put together the structure of the app. My programming knowledge is 20 years out of date but this approach meant I was able to construct simple apps without spending 6 months learning java. Although I have 2 apps on my phone built with app inventor they are fairly basic and I would need to invest a lot of time to become more proficient.
