I have had my DesireHD for just over a year now and have been happy with keeping it stock (currently 2.3.4 with sense 2.1).  However the time has come to start moving it along a bit.  I believe ICS will be a step too far for it so would like to take baby steps and jump to one of the ROMs based on Sense 3.0 or 3.5.  From what I have been able to ascertain 3.5 is a little lighter and runs more comfortably on single core phones, however I am mainly looking at the change to get things like the new lockscreen and homescreen and widget animations.  I need 3G, wifi, bluetooth and GPS etc to work properly (as they do at the moment).
So fellow GZers who have a DHD I have a couple of questions:

1. Have you used the 'Advanced Ace Hack Kit' to root your DHD?  Comments if you have successfully.

2.  If you have installed a Sense 3.5 or 3.0 based ROM, which one and how does it perform?

i did this a month or so ago now on my desire HD.

I think I used that Hack tool as well. It was easy and worked a treat.

I use Virtuous Unity as my Rom. Currently it's on sense 3.0. Runs nice and does all I want.

The only issue I have is at home my vodafone reception is poor and always has been. The phone occasionally drops out of service. But it won't pick a connection back up until I put it in airplane mode then normal again.

They did recommend upgrading the radio which I haven't done, so that could solve it.

Step 1 successfully achieved.  My DHD is rooted (using Ace Hack Kit) and have made a nandroid backup using CWM recovery.  Now to look into some of the ROMs available.  I have downloaded the ROM you mentioned and also a Revolution and a RCMix3D one.

Edit: Just looking at the downloads I have a 'virtuous afinity' as opposed to virtuous unity.  may have to investigate further.

You could use my Pyramid3D ROM in the Desire HD Forums XDA it's pretty fast, sense 3.5 isn't that good yet IMO

Thanks for the suggestion.  I'm quite keen on a smooth 'out of the box' experience so am after a ROM that pretty much replicates what you would get on the Sensation XL (with obvious caveates).  By saying 3.5 isn't that good yet, do you mean the P3D rendition of it or 3.5 in general?

Oh and I found Virtuous Unity thanks Darkness, should have looked further down the page in xda.

Not quite the same, but I have been using LeeDroids Desire ROM which is a port of his Desire HD ROM and has Sense 3.0.  For what its worth it seems to run pretty well although with the occasional lag but everything seems to be working.  I especially like the new RSS widget on which you can load all your feeds and not just one.

Doing the radio flash recommended for Virtuous Unity also seems to have sorted my network drop problem.

I didn't spend much time looking at roms. But similarly wanted a pretty close to an out-of-box experience. And i think it hits it quite well. HTC sync still works like it used to.

I ended up loading RCMix3D 4.0 as a first ROM. All good so far, although in my haste to get on with it I didn't back up some apps properly and that has cost me some setup time. It is a Sense 3.5 ROM with a few added extras with a few added extras by the cooks. Anybody running a Sense 3.5 ROM have a steer to an instruction manual because there is nothing on any HTC site?

Additionally I backed up all the app apks before flashing the new ROM. If I reinstall them using a file manager I assume there will be no link to the Market and therefore no updates. Is that correct?
I now have Titanium Backup installed, if I back up all my apps using that does that allow me to load them back on to a new ROM?

Just an update, on an update really!

HTC appear to have released an official OTA update for the DHD taking it to Sense 3.0.  Has anybody received/installed this?  Having gone the custom ROM route to get Sense 3.5 (RCMix3D V4.0), I am not about to go back to an un-rooted ROM.  I note a rooted version of the WWE is already available from XDA,

original (unrooted)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1382928

I have downloaded the rooted ROM and may flash it to have a play, but for now am happy with the ROM I have.... unless there are killer features I'm going to gain from a stock ROM (I doubt it).

I first posted a query on that other forum 6 months ago by which stage Sense 3.0 had been out for a few months, so it is obvious these official updates can't be rushed Undecided.

Edit:  Added the correct link (initially only had unrooted).
