While the Android Market has heaps of SMS apps, none will install on my Motorola Xoom tablet because it is "not a supported device".

Is there a way to use an Android tablet to send SMS on the Telecom XT network?

Do telecom offer a web to text service themselves? You could text via that if it came to it.

Airdroid is cool. It uses the web browser. Not sure if that is an option.

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

I'm not trying anything yet! Still looking for the app that will send sms. Anything I've tried to download says it's incompatable with my system/isp.

Does your device have a SIM card installed, or at least have the capacity to have one installed?

Tried this?

Actually ignore that, but I wonder if you would be able to do it with Wondershare's MobileGo.

I use DeskSMS, which means from my tablet I can use web or gmail chat, or email to send/recieve sms from the device, needing only an internet connection.

Pipes back to my phone over the internet and gets sent as a real SMS from my XT connection (i.e. correct phone number displayed to reciever etc).

Wow that's rather annoying. Seems there are a few workarounds for the xoom though. Hope this helps.

That's an example of an app that would be perfect for my purposes but is incompatible with my Motorola Xoom.

Not even slightly as I had already done a Google search before posting here. Had I found a result that worked on a non-rooted Xoom on the XT network why do you think I'd bother asking in a forum which is after all intended for discussion on the NZ network??

People have tried to help you by offering suggestions...  and you come back with a snakey reply when you can't get things to work.. what's up with that?

Find an apk for chompsms or handcent and side-load it from the sd card.

Thanks for the suggestion. Am I correct in my assumption that the device will need to be rooted for this to work?

shouldn't require root, just need to tick allow apps from non market sources.

The way I've been doing it though is backup the app on my phone with Titanium backup and copy the backed up files to my tablet and restore it again with Titanium. (note Titanium requires root though).
