I have had a cell phone with Android 2.1 for about 18 months,
Two things I have allways had a problem with is wifi and 3g,

1-> When wifi has been on, then you need 3g, the 3g connects but no data will go up or down, from what I have read it says to enable/dissable flight mode, but has never worked, only a reboot enables 3g.

2-> Wifi won't connect to open networks like telecom, macdonalds etc, sometimes it will connect, but no data up or down??

I have read about these problems on furums, but no solutions offered, so is Anroid 2.1 stuck with these faults and is this fixed in Anroid 2.2 and later?

Thanks

Any Android Guru's who can help with this, or is it just time to upgrade the phone?

The VF 845 is 2.1 android. You could try a factory reset, just in case that fixes it (im thinking the wifi issue in particular).

Otherwise if you are committed to the device then you could root it and add a 3rd party ROM with 2.2.

I think it is like the 8150 and other cheap android phones, especially by Huawei (it is a huawei u8120 branded for vodafone), it will never be updated. If you are ok with doing a bit of messing around with your phone, put a custom rom on it, otherwise just upgrade it.

They're not 2.1 issues, they may however be issues with its implementation on that handset (e.g. poor hardware drivers).

I've found that McDonald's network, and the (Wellington CBD network when you can pick it up) seem to be very fussy as to whether or not they'll actually work on any given device regardless of OS, so I wouldn't rely on those as benchmarks. Possibly due to people deliberately trying to break it.

hello I've got the vodafone 845. If your connecting on wifi to open Maccas, you have to open your browser (opera in my case) and refresh until you see a 'terms and conditions' on a Mac's page. Is that it?

For your 3g problem is it that you've got the wrong APN settings? I've had the same problem, but with wrong APN settings.

+1 I have recently flashed this rom on my spare 845 and it is significantly better than stock. This is to be expexted from any custom rom, but this is particularly noticable on this one.

I also flashed an ICS pre alpha port, which was more for laughs than anything else. It ran horribly (plenty of bugs, no hardware acceleration, no camera etc), but it is being worked on and updated so it will be interesting to see where that goes.

Yeh, found out what the problem was to #1 (can't connect to 3g after using wifi)->

It was an app (APN on/off Widget) I had to dissable/enable internet access, decided to uninstall it to see if it was this before a posible Android upgrade to 2.3 which I was not looking forward to doing.
And now it connects to 3g perfectly anytime regardless of using wifi (APN app was handy though)

Now just have to find an open wifi network to test #2 to see if the APN app had anything to do with that problem as well.

Regarding upgrading the Vodafone 845 2.1 to 2.3, I notice none of the roms have the radio working and I can't find a 2.2 with radio working either as I use the phone to listen to the radio often.

Cheers
