Since this is an Android device I thought I would post this note in this group.

Some of you might know that the Logitech Revue is a Google TV device that runs Android.

Logitech has recently discontinued the device but Sony still make a Google TV appliance and it's integrated into many of their TV's Also LG has entered into a partnership with Google to incoporate GTV into their TV's. I saw a few at CES and it is quite impressive.

Anyway since Logitech is discontinuing the device you can now find refurbished ones on Amazon for $79(US). That seemed cheap enough to get just to play with so I purchased one. Note that Amazon will actually ship this to NZ if you want for about $30 so it's a good deal even if you have to have it shipped.

According to Logitech the first release of GTV wasn't ready for prime time and it affected sales considerably. But with Honeycomb it's much better. I guess it was a matter of timing and being an early adopter.

I plugged the device into my TV via my AVR over HDMI, powered it up and the first thing I had to do was wait for a firmware upgrade. This was the upgrade to Honeycomb that had been recently released.

After that some configuration. Because it's a US centric device and designed to integrate into your cable TV/satellite STB you are asked to tell it your zip code and then choose a carrier. That doesn't work here of course so I said add unknown device for TV. That device could either be a TCL T-Box or a Sky TV box so long as they have HDMI out (the device has no other video inputs).  I added a Freeview receiver with HDMI out.

I then connected the HDMI out of the Freeview STB to the HDMI in on the Revue.

So what does it get you?

Well it has a number of cool features on it.

There is nice Chrome browser which has been optimised for TV display. That coupled with a wireless keyboard makes for a nice web surfing experience on the TV. There is Netflix which works pretty well and now saves my having to power up my PS3 to watch Netflix.

There is also an optimised Youtube application which works quite nicely and it's not hard to sit in front of the TV and start Youtube surfing (but mind your data caps!)

When you select the TV button you see the image from your TV device. In my case it's the output from the Freeview receiver. But because the box doesn't know about the Freeview receiver I have to use my Harmony remote to change channels. That isn't too bad since the Harmony knows about GTV (as you could expect) so I can control many functions on the Revue with the Harmony.

You can even put the TV image into a window and do other things at the same time.

I can see if you had an integrated STB you could see a channel guide (from the zip code you entered) change channels, schedule programmes etc. directly from the Revue. So if I were to upgrade my older TCL cable box to a T-Box theoretically I could control it from the Revue since there appears to be some way to have it learn IR codes. More research required later here. But I would never get the EGP on the Revue of course.

The Logitech provided media player is  a bit limited so I downloaded a video player from the Market for $2.99. This player is much more functional able to play content from USB or SMB shares.

But I do that with a Popcorn Hour now and I did notice because of hardware limitations in the Revue (which apparently don't exist in the Sony GTV box) it cannot play MPEG2 files, files in ts containers or files with DTS audio. Therefore it's unlikely I would use the Revue to play content.

FOr $79.99 it's good value and I have integrated into my HT system now. For me tha main bonus was being able to integrate my Freeview receiver into my HT system so I can watch the few HD shows around with 5.1 audio. Up till now the only I could do that was to use my PS3 and PlayTV.

Plus having access to the Internet in the family room for all of us to see is a useful feature as is being able to watch Youtube on the TV.

Hi there - very interested to read your experiences. I am torn between the cheaper Revue and the more expensive Sony NSZ-GT1. From the sounds of it the Revue is being discontinued so it would probably pay to stick with the Sony as well as the fact it sounds like the Sony can play a few more formats out-of-the-box.

I already have an HDX1000 (effectively identical to your Popcorn Hour) which I hope to replace with one of these Google TVs by running the Plex Media Server on my home server (Ubuntu). The interface is a lot slicker than the HDX in my opinion - have you had a play with that? There is an Android app you can download for Google TV which turns the TV into a Plex Media Client.

I have MySky HDi so I would be interested to see how well it integrates into the Google TV environment. I am guessing it will be fairly primitive? I can see I would be able to setup the IR blaster to control the Sky box, but like you say there would be no EPG on the Google TV which takes away most of the benefit (in terms of searching etc).

So I guess what I would be getting by buying one of these devices would be a slicker front end to my local media (via Plex), a full web browser on my TV as well as the YouTube and other channels, and potentially access to Netflix - via something like unblock-us.

Plus I guess with the Sony I could sell my existing BluRay player.

I basically bought the Revue on a whim since it was $79 refurbished from Amazon. I didn't really have an objective for it.

As a media player it's limited in the type of content and container it can play. Plus access with the Logitech client is a bit constrained. I did purchase a media player from the market called GTVBox which is a much better player but it's limited by the platform. But it does have the ability to play content from standard Windows shares so I can access content on the shares I usually play with the Popcorn Hour.

It will never replace my PCH. With yamj and the ability to play just about any content, the PCH is always going to be my main video player. It's the only player that I am aware of that can play content with Dolby True HD or DTS HD MA audio.

I think you will find the same problem I have with integrating your MySky box. While you can add it, there will be no EPG and you won't be able to initiate a recording with it since you cannot integrate the box with the keyboard. I was able to add my ExtraTerrestrial box by having it learn some commands but it only asked me for the numbers and channel up/down.

What makes the GTV box more flexible in terms of operation than say the Sony one is the integration with the Harmony remote. Effectively I can turn on my TV and AVR with the Harmony remote and control most of the functions of the GTV box with the Harmony remote. This includes switching from the GTV interface to live TV, initiating and controlling Netflix and navigating the Market. What I can't do is navigate Chrome so that's when you need the keyboard and mouse.

One could argue it's superfluous to my requirements but what I like now is

 - having my FreeviewHD box now integrated into the entire system (I also have TCL cable but SD only)
- having Netflix on the box without having to fire up the PS3 all the time (which tends to get a bit noisy when playing video)
- having a browser on the TV which is very readable (56"). It's nice to be able to surf the net in the family room with everybody being able to see the results
- Youtube on the big TV - that's rather nice also.

Again YMMV

So I got my hands on a Revue. First I had it connected to my AVR without my MySky box. I could play all my local media via my Plex Media Server after downloading the Plex Google TV app. I could watch YouTube clips and everything was working nicely.

Then I decided to try running my MySky box thru the Revue. I had to set it up as a Generic Video Source, is this what you did for your Freeview box? After doing this I was able to watch Live TV thru the Revue but when I ran the Plex or YouTube apps I could see the video, but the audio was stuck on whatever was playing on the Sky box.

So the audio is obviously getting to the AVR since the Sky signal is working for Live TV. But the Revue isn't switching the audio over when I change to anything else.

Any ideas?!

That's an interesting problem. First of all did your Revue get the latest HC update?  As I noted as soon as I plugged mine in, 3.1 was waiting and I let it do the update before I did any configuration. And I have also updated the Youtube app to the one that was released about 2 days ago which is optimised for GTV.

I have no experience with the Sky box but I presume that that there is only one connection to the Revue, that is HDMI and audio and video are passed along it. And the GTV box is outputting LPCM audio over HDMI.

When you have the Sky box attached are you getting the sounds that GTV makes as you choose various options?

What you could also try is to connect an optical cable from the GTV to your AVR and see if you get audio that way?

Also I would visit this forum

http://www.googletvforum.org/forum/logitech-revue/

Folks there have a lot of experience in the Revue and might have some better ideas. They helped me out with remote codes for my Freeview box.

Thanks for those suggestions. I had found the Google TV forum and have been busy reading up. I also figured out the problem with my audio. The MySky decoder only passes 2 channel audio over HDMI so I had a coax cable running to my AVR which delivers the full 5.1 audio. When I put the Revue in the loop it can only take HDMI from the Sky box so i would have to forego 5.1 audio.

It is a limitation of the MySky box and is pretty disappointing. I can have full 5.1 audio for my Sky viewing but I can't have it running through the Revue. I think I will just have to have the Revue and Sky on different inputs on my AVR and use the Revue as purely a Plex client and Chrome browser etc. I guess I am not losing all that much since I can't integrate the Sky box properly. It is just nice to be able to flick between Sky and a browser without having to change my AVR over.
