Not that I could find it now but at one time I was sure there was a thread on best Android apps. Therefore and as things are changing in the market all the time, I thought I might start another one.

There are three I have found recently which I have been quite impressed with:

1. Viber. An app that allows you to make calls and send texts over the internet. The call functionality didn't seem to work that well for me but the texting has been great. Of course it does rely on the other person having their wifi on.

2. Sportsmate. Perfect for the football tragic like me, with match scores and details from every league imaginable and news reports as well.

3. Advanced Clock Widget. Customisable widget which allows you to have any combination of clock/current temp/weather/sunrise & sunset/date. All in writing so no fancy animations i.e. nice and simple.

Anyone else have any recommendations?

For me, a few to note:

1) QuickPic - the fastest photo/video gallery app

2) Tunin Radio - listen to any radio station around the world

3) Sygic - the best GPS navigation app in my opinion - can be used offline

4) What's App - instant messaging with the functionality of sending of images, audio and video files

PowerAmp - The benchmark in Android music players.

Elixir 2 - A great app for finding out various in-depth info about your device. Also creates super useful custom widgets.

Swype - Very fast android keyboard

The NDTV Cricket App is nice with live up to date cricket scoring and commentary from nearly each ball.

Its handy when u away and it kept me up to date with the Proteas vs Blackcaps.

For every other day that there is no cricket my favourite are:

- Waze. I use it daily while driving, Live GPS Map, submit speed traps etc to other wazers out there. Get warnings about traffic/speed cams etc..
- WhatsApp. Its like BlackBerry Messenger for Android.
- Google Reader. Nice to keep up to date with rss feeds
- TuneIn. Great for listening to my favourite radio stations from SA while I'm on the road.
- PowerAmp. For Playing mp3.s

Some others I user

- Vodafone My Account

- Power Up (Power Shops Android App for meter readings)

- Opera Mobile (I hate the standard internet browser)

- QuickVPN

- Stuff News

handcent - sms mms client
viber - free 3g/wifi calls & txt
whatsapp - messaging app
sipdroid - voip client
navfree maps - free gps app on android

My new fav:

Google Listen - allows you to download podcasts direct to the phone. Barely bother hooking it up to the PC these days.

Here's a list I prepared earlier.

ES File Explorer - File explorer for local, LAN, FTP, Bluetooth and cloud storage. Can enable root permission on rooted Android
Xiialive - Steaming radio with favourites listed in your own named categories.
WiFi Analyser - Allows you to analyser WiFi networks in your area.
3G Watchdog - Monitor and manage your 3G data access state. Yes it has a big red button!!! Oh, and a cute dog.
Apk Extractor - Extract a loaded application to a folder allowing apk file to be moved/saved to another system/backup for version recovery.
Fing - Best LAN analyser managed from you WiFi interface. Ethernet interface management coming soon.
Samaba fileshare - [root*] Allows an Android device to share local file storage with the rest of the LAN.
IMDb - Best movie lookup.
TeeVoid - NZ TV guide.
K-9 Mail - IMAP and POP mail client for all your mail needs. If you can find better tell me.
BSPlayer - On some systems will probably out preform all other video players due to its HW acceleration, and that includes MKV acceleration over LANs. Only thing that stopped a FV-1 Android TV from becoming a paper weight.
MoboPlayer - The other goto video player.
Root Explorer - [root*] best file explorer for modifying system files on rooted system.
NetQin Security - Don't use it on a smartphone, but do use it on LAN Android box as it has a wide array of features for bandwidth monitoring as well as anti virus checking. Picked up a virus Avast and others didn't.... Hmmm.?..?..
Business Calendar - It's a business calendar.
CalenGoo - Calendar that works on olde Android V2.2 systems with no pre-installed calendar sub-system. Does sync with Google Calandar and others.
Jorte Calendar - Another calender with built in calendaring sub-system, that can sync with Google calendars.
Go Contacts EX - Good Contact and dialing app. Probably not the best, but after a while you just want to ask someone else what's the best and then balance that with your own information. Any thoughts on this? Is there a contact application I can just type 'doctor' or 'lawyer' and get the formal contact information for all those stored??????. Go Contacts EX has no nickname or job title search.

[root*] - The system will need to be rooted for this application to work.

All good suggestions but I like to not clutter my phone up with too many apps.

I do like Google Music - the one that works with their cloud based service. While you have to sideload it and do the IP hack to sign up, once your music is in the cloud it's really convenient to be able to play anywhere you have Internet access.

As noted on another thread Vonage is quite nice. At the moment it's quite useful because you can make free calls to any US number, up to 3000 minutes a month.
