I'm an Aussie who just loves NZ and who holidays there as often as I can. On my last trip in November 2011, I purchased a HUAWEI X1 from TNZ. It turned out to be a humdinger of a phone and as a bonus it works well on the Australian 3G networksl. It is not network locked although the GUI is TNZ.

However I would like to make the phone more generic so it is easier to use in both locations. To attain this I would like to either refresh the Android TNZ modified Froyo with a normal Android Froyo or maybe just locate and uninstall the locked (and hidden) TNZ apps.

I have followed a few paths to the HUAWEI Device site but although there seems to be a normal Androoid Froyo available the site will not download it (other people are saying the same thing on different forums).

So if anyone has a vanilla Froyo for HUAWEI X1 I would love a copy.

If perchance I get a copy, I would also appreciate if anyone can provide me with the steps to safetly refreshing the Android software.

Also if anyone knows how to locate the locked TNZ apps and how to uninstall them I would be very appreciative.

If you feel adventurous, and don't mind voiding your warranty (which is probably a bit moot anyway, since you bought the phone in NZ, and reside in Aus), you may like to try putting CyanogenMod on it.

It is probably closer to stock Android than the Telecom branding, and it is based on 2.3.7 (Gingerbread) as a bonus.

Thanks, Dontpanic42 for the tip. I had seen CyanogenMod mentioned on other threads and could not find any plain english summaries of what it really is and how to install it so I decided to do a little research then I journeyed down the link you provided to have a hack and see where it might lead.

I spent about one hour Googling the different parts in the process and trying to understand before I kicked off (nothing to lose).

There were a few heartstoppers along the way but in the end a little bit of persistence got me there. The only thing that didn't work was the google apps bulk loader (I had read where others had the same problem - the resolution is to go to market and load them one at a time).

So now I have my generic HUAWEI X1 and it seems to be a screamer, The GUI looks smart.

Now I'll spend a couple of days getting accustomed to it and seeing if it fits the bill.

Actually, reading that part back, on reflection it probably isn't actually closer to stock Android compared to the Telecom ROM, but it is (as you have probably already found out) a lot better in most ways.

In any case, I'm glad you got it all working smoothly.

I have an IDEOS X5 U8800, and have been running ICS (Android 4.0.3) on it for the past week or so since dzo (Kiwi XDA dev) has been putting out a pretty solid port for it.
It definitely can be heart-stopping at times loading custom ROMs on, but once you get familiar with the different aspects and technicalities of the Android operating eco-system, then you get more confident with it all.
That is, until, Huawei start putting out beta versions of software updates that start bricking phones, and null some people's IMEI number. I was lucky enough, or cautious enough, to avoid most of those issues.

That U8180 port looks pretty active though, so you'll likely get any bugs fixed quick if you come across any.
Warning: XDA forums can become a tad addictive!! ;-)
