My LG P500 has "The World Clock" which shows the time in various places around the world. Unfortunately it shows Samoa as being in yesterday instead of today. Is this the fault of some international reference that writers of apps use - or is it simply that the app hasn't been updated for the 30.12.11 change?

Only loaded it in the last 7 days. I fear that the author may have assumed that countries never change their time zones!

In the meantime checked another 10 clock widgets - several of them updated in 2012 - but they all show complete ignorance of the one change in international time zones in the past year. Wouldn't you think that an app maker would check or even subscribe to one of the reference sites! (You don't need to answer that one.)
Absolutely free: time wasters.

I would not blame the Application but the Operating system as that will have the timezone information in it not the Applications you are using.

Is there a newer version of the Operating system (Android) for your iPhone which has this timezone change?

Samoa Announced it would do this in May 2011.

What version of Android are you running on the LG?

So the software on this "new" phone needs to be updated a few weeks after purchase. I guess that will need new hardware so I'll have to keep to the apps that do work. I'll stick to my reliable world clocks on the PC!

Android 2.3.3 was released 9 February 2011 so it won't have the Samoa changes as no one knew about it at that time.

I presume you are running windows on your "PC" and I am 100% sure when you installed windows on your PC your operating system didn't know about the Samoa timezone changes but you did a windows update or alike which then included the changes.

Most likely there will not be any upgrades available for your phone with the new timezone information officially . I believe the P500 was released about a year ago.

I would think it is not common at all to find a Phone which has correct Samoa Timezone support. Was it one of the requirement when you got it? As I said windows wasn't didn't have the new Samoa timezone support when installed and you used that and you are lucky that the timezone support was upgraded in that.

LG may have a patch for this for your phone but looking at their website I don't think so.. Contact them..

Not really relevant. When I checked international times in my PC I went to a reliable web site. There's no reason why I can't do the same on my Android phone. It's not a big issue.

I'm not sure why an app should need to consult "reliable websites" - that would seem to be a strange way to check the time, when there should be libraries in the operating system that know the timezone rules.

In GNU/Linux these are part of the tzdata library installed under:
/usr/share/zoneinfo/

Each linux distribution provides their own, but they can be easily created from the source which can be found here:

In Android, it would appear that the main design goal was to do things differently than Linux.

But you where saying all the applications you where running on your LG where showing the incorrect date/time - as the phone doesn't know about the changes in the operating system.

If you where to do the same on windows (without it knowing about the changes - i.e. use a version of windows without the updates) using the operating system it would be show the incorrect time. (Native Program.. not a website)

But you say you go to websites on the PC to find the correct time.. so if you go to the same websites on the LG phone you'lll get the same correct information.

You are comparing 2 things.. the operating system knowing about the changes and a 3rd party website knowing about the time.
