Hi everyone,

I recently bought a Vodafone 858 (U8160) in New Zealand. I have decided to put the most recent U8160 cyanogen Mod on it, and feel relativly confident in doing it.

I have rooted the phone using Superoneclick, and have tried numerous ways of installing CWM on it.

First I tried using Rom Manager, and let it auto install CWM on the phone. It correctly picked up the phone type (U8160), and installed it but whenever I try to get into recovery, it does a non-stop hourglass, and doesn't load it.

I can still get into the phone by not putting it into recovery mode at boot.

I have also tried finding U8160 specific CWM myself, and installing them via ADB (using Flash_Image) to install specific CWM's but still gets locked up in hourglass when trying to enter recovery mode. I can still get into the phone just booting normally.

I have tried the fast boot way, but I cant seem to get the phone into fast boot mode, and the computer stays on "waiting for device to connect" mode.

Any help will be much appreciated, and ask any questions needed.

Thanks in advance,

Using a root file explorer, navigate to /system/etc and remove install-recovery.sh if it is there. This is sometimes the cause of custom recovery images not staying on.

I haven't tried this on that particular model though so I'm not sure if it is the solution you need. Make sure you make a backup of the file first in case something goes wrong.

No such file exists at /etc/system. Is there anywhere else it may be?

I haven't tried flashing recoveries on that model so I'm not sure. This might be a stupid question but do you have the system mounted as r/w? (read/write)

I'm using a File Manager, with Super User access, so I would assume its read/write.

Giving the file explorer SU privileges doesn't necessarily mean it's mounted as r/w.

Download this app from the market and use it to toggle r/w and r/o
http://www.appbrain.com/app/mount-system-%28rw-ro%29/com.beansoft.mount_system

I'm not sure if this is the issue but it's worth a try.

I cant install that app as it isn't supported by my phone.

However I would still be able to see the file if it was r/o not r/w wouldn't I. So I could see it if it's there (and not fix it).

True, good point. I just re read your other post saying it wasn't at /etc/system. Just confirming the location is supposed to be /system/etc.

If this isn't the problem you may need to do a bit of research on XDA developers or similar sites. Is your phone not booting into fastboot at all? You should just see an hourglass on the screen on this model, it doesn't have an actual fastboot menu on the phone (from what I've read at least).

I paid money and got "Root Explorer". It's the best (IMHO) and has explicit read/write mounting selection.

+1 for Root Explorer - It's simple for most usage, but with lots of hidden functionality, and it's not expensive.

As for fastboot, try issuing a

adb reboot bootloader
or
adb reboot-bootloader

command from the command shell on your PC while the phone is plugged in (assuming USB debugging is enabled) - that _should_ boot it into "fastboot" mode if it is in fact supported.

Also, ROM Manager is a complete pile of crap. Try to avoid using it if possible, it stuffs things up more frequently than it works. Do things manually, there's better odds of it actually working.

If you have root access, and the CWM recovery .img file on the SDCard, then you should be able to issue an appropriate shell command to flash it anyway, usually something along the line of:

adb shell
sudo
accept superuser access
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
reboot recovery

You may just be able to issue an "adb flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img" command.

I have installed Cyanogenmod on another model Ideos, but I don't recall the exact method I used, there's plenty of options.
