Hi - I have a LG P500 which is now a spare phone, so I would like to factory reset it so it is back to its standard configuration. One question though - it was froyo when I purchased and I have upgraded it via LG's update software to gingerbread. Will factory reset retain gingerbread, or will I be back to the early froyo OS? Anyone know? thanks in advance.

No, a reset will only erase user data, not system data.

brilliant, thx for quick reply. One last question, the phone came with N drive installed with free NZ maps on the SD card. Will this app be safe with the factory reset, or is it at risk? cheers

I did a factory reset on my Telecom P500  (the P500h) that had NDrive, personally I never use it because the maps are so out of date it's not funny,  NDrive has remained, no idea though if it still works (I'd say it does).

Factory reset also removes the (previously) impossible to uninstall Facebook and Twitter apps (which is good, because I hated having the Facebook app installed - see many privacy related articles about it lately) so they are now installable/uninstallable at a whim, which is a good thing.

There are map updates available for nDrive. I managed to update them on the g/f's P500, but I suspect you're still better off just using Google maps.

nDrive is a system app which will survive a wipe, worse case is that if you've updated the application, it'll revert to the original version that the phone came with and you'll need to update it again.

There are?  I just fired up nDrive, downloaded the 35MB to get the app working again, and for New Zealand it still says "Last update: 2010.09, and having downloaded and checked the map, it does seem quite out of date.

Hmm, maybe I'm mis-remembering and it's just because I managed to shoehorn the app back onto the phone after installing a custom firmware.

I've had a hunt around and that does in fact appear to be the "latest" version of the maps for what appears to be an abandoned version of the application. Even if you were to fork out the $68 for the new version of the application, the maps are only as recent as June 2011, which is pretty poor considering they use NAVTEQ data, which was updated for NZ twice in the last 6 months.

I use to use Navigon on my SGS2 as it was packaged with it and it's a great program, but I'm hesitant to pay $80 for a "full" version of it for my Galaxy Note given how infrequently I really _need_ a GPS. Google maps will do for now.

Plenty, in West Auckland alone, SH 18 got extended, Nor-West Motorway (SH 16) also got extended, with about 3 major new interchanges in conjunction, including the maze of roundabouts on the Hobsonville side of the airbase, several intersection realignments/changes as well.  Also I would have to check (and I really don't want to) but for many years, most online maps had inaccurate information for the onramps to/start of State Highway 20 (South East Motorway) which is going to have an impact on anyone wishing to travel to the airport if the maps are still out of date.  (Garmin's current maps actually even have the start point of SH20 marked as a roundabout where it's now further nor-west as proper onramps (as they are now working on extending it to Pt Chev).

I'd imagine as well most GPS systems with Lane Guidance are also messed up with the Victoria Park Tunnel and the lane changes for South/Westbound travel from the North Shore too.

With the number of other local & state infrastructure projects in the rest of NZ, I'd stand by my well and truly out of date statement.

I don't know about factory resets, but the N-drive map that got downloaded on a phone activated in Dec 2011 had very up to date maps, the new motorway at Hobsonville was on it.

Thanks, I'll take the chance with N-drive. The good thing about N drive is that it doesn't rely on data, so is free to run. Yes the maps are not totally up to date, but how many streets change over time? 99% of the time, it is ok. Generally, I have found it to be an excellent little app, esp since the phone came bundled with a car cradle and charger. I'll continue to use the LG as a navigator in preference to trying to kit out the S2 to do the job.

Plenty

Yeah I know, twas a joke.  The Garmin option is awesome as it is (or at least was) supported by the public wiki type project.  That stuff was well up to date and was free too.
