Any thoughts on which is better, and adroid phone or an IPhone?

Oh and the differences between Android platforms?

This will start a battle... And while at that, why not Windows Phone? The Nokia Luma is a great handset...

They will all achieve the same goal.

Probably comes down to how much you want to spend/size of display/telco you prefer/what you will be using it for.

..and yes - the Nokia windows phones are getting very good reviews at the moment - you shouldnt ignore them. Nokia has always made pretty good hardware and the windows phone 7 OS is getting a lot of positive feedback lately.

I have been a longstanding Nokia fan, has been my favourite handset maker till now, still use a Nokia, but i did not know anything about Windows 7 mobile, but i know a little around Android as i have a tablet thingy running android, at it operates similar to an IPhone whcih i have also had a wee chance tom play with.

It's not Windows Mobile - it's Windows Phone. Different beasts. We have a Windows Phone subforum with a Nokia Lumia owners' discussion. We are also running a Telecom-sponsored blog with Nokia Lumia reviews.

Those reviews are being done by six Geekzone users who received a Nokia Lumia each - you will see good and bad there. If you go through the pages in that blog you will see we previously done the same when Telecom launched the HTC Sensation (Android).

So far nine Geekzone users got into that blog. And a little fairy tells me there's something new coming very soon - who will be the next lucky users?

iPhone's strengths are if you are single, sociable, like games, or just want a phone that works (i.e. regular updates, plenty of apps). I recommend iPhone to most people, and plenty of geeks.

Android if you want to play with open source, run as root, do geeky things with your phone, or can't afford an iPhone.

Other stuff: 1. I have the Google Nexus (ICS) phone. 2. Beware of massive Microsoft marketing/astro-turfing going with the Nokia Lumia - get personal experience or recommendation from trusted friends before getting one. 3. In the past I would have said Google had advantage over Apple for security and privacy, but Google is now on par with Apple.

Marketing? Yes. Astro-turfing? I haven't seen anything that would be classed as astro-turfing.

If you are talking about the TelecomTech blog... It's not astro-turfing, all posts have a notice that Telecom is sponsoring the blog, but all posts were written by other Geekzone users like yourselves. And that's not something that's being done just because it's a Windows Phone - we've done this in the same blog with the HTC Sensation when it was launched.

We look around the forums and find people who participate in the community, people who have demonstrated balanced views and we give them something new to try. You will see in those blog posts that some of the people compare the Nokia Lumia with their Samsung Galaxy or iPhone devices - sometimes good, sometimes bad.

You should try one, before discarding it based on "being Microsoft". And not a cursory examination at a shop. Use it for two days and you will see how different things are.

I have had a few Android devices - still have one I use when I go overseas and use with a local SIM for data only. They have flaws, in that users have to put a lot of effort to customize those devices, and not all features are available in all devices, depending on manufacturer to implement those.

As for the iPhone, you explained it already - Apple is on its own in terms of controlling the device. It's their device, not yours.

Go into a few stores and try some handsets out (Although not sure if they would open the box?). Failing that see what your friends are using and see what works best for you.

Neither Android nor iPhone are better than the other, depends entirely on the user in two regards - what they want their device for (for example someone for whom the camera was all important should be looking at the Symbian 808 Pure-view), and what kind of person/user they are. Techy folk who like to play around with things/customise stuff will often prefer Android, whereas people who just want the easiest user experience possible will often find iPhones may suit them better (although despite what is implied up the thread most Android phones 'just work' too).

The thing is I can walk into harvey normam or who ever , buy a capacitive screened android that does everything an apple does, and more, for about 120 dollars. I can give one to my mum (73) and she can use the same apps I do. So I can text her automatically so she knows when to put the jug on, like when I'm 1 km away. I can run the best navigaton program in the world. There are now over 10 billon app downloads from the android market.

However, look at what they quoted in the herald

My next choice of phone will probably be a blackberry now that Blackberries can run android apps. This is a huge turn around for Blackberry who had a nice secure niche market based on privacy and security. If nokia had done the same and joined thier OS with android they would be a brand name in 10 years time, No company that makes hardware will survive without some form of subscription to a platform and that platform needs to be widespread. Nokia and windows might survivie but they need to innovate fast. Very fast

Consider what else you have. For example we have gone with iPhones as they integrate with iTunes that we used extensively already with ipods, and we had lots of apps from my sons ipod touch.

Some do not like the "locked down" environment on an iPhone but I must say that the advantages of not being hugely customisable is that everything just 'works' out of the box.

Lazy is such an ugly word, I prefer to call it selective participation

I have not tried Iphone so cant comment. Cheap Android you will have dissapointing experience. I tried the Windows Phone 7 when first came out and loved the interface but couldnt use it with Linux computer. As I also use windows wasnt too big a problem but for me the screen was too small. I like my android phones but now Windows Phone is increasing and with Nokia starting to make them I would serioulsy consider one with a 4inch screen. The Windows phone should definitely be considered.
