my tablet thingy is running 2.1 but i want a newer version as many apps need it to run.

That would depend on whether the manufacturer has ported a later version for it and made it available OR if its a popular enough device whether the programming community has created/ported an upgrade for it.

What brand/model?

Looking at this site it appears you can indeed update to Gingerbread (2.3). (Btw, 2G = if you have the 2 GB version, 4G = if you have the 4GB version)

I suggest taking any further inquiries there, as they have a dedicated forum for the aPad and it's variants.

Finally, I hope this wasn't your first impression of the Android OS, because a cheap Chinese tablet doesn't do justice to what the platform is capable of. :P
