Exactly There is no doubt its illegal. It be up to the prosecution to prove the intent, carelessness and find a chain of evidence beyond reasonable doubt I guess. If someone did such a thing.

Just to be clear, as the original poster, the article I posted was interviewing the police.

Justice was probably served and no one was harmed directly from the GPS tracked packages.

However I must admit in my youth I did use a gun to shoot at a vandal smashing car windows.

Luckily I was a bad aim. He jumped in his vehicle in a panic, wrecked, a short distance and was arrested.

The police ignored his claim someone shot at him. I was never interviewed.

If I had killed him, I would have rightfully been charged with murder.

The ends don't justify the means. I just got lucky, or I'd have ruined several lives including my own.

In a fit of passion I shot through a closed window, with every intent of trying to kill him.

The window may have had an affect on the shot, possibly by partially deflecting it.

He either saw the flash or heard the shot, or both.

And then he panicked..

To be clear I'm not condoning my actions; I regret it.

Everyone was lucky.

Reminds me off someone I knew years ago who use to work at Boggo Rd Gaol in Brisbane, certain duties required them to carry a gun.

He said that there were a couple of inmates he would have no hesitation in firing the first shot between the eyes and the second warning shot into the air.

I also get angry when I see hard-working dairy owners being repeatedly robbed by low-lifes and they can't seem to do anything to protect themselves. But I still don't believe that giving them guns is an answer. The USA example should be enough to convince anyone. We need more and better police, but people also have to be willing to pay for that.

Geektastic: This is where we differ. I don't care remotely about fairness to criminals.

I've been burgled twice and wouldn't have the slightest concern what happened to the scum who did it if it prevented them from doing it again.
If they don't like consequences perhaps they could, you know, not commit crimes.

I am concerned, because of the likes of ACC and free health, things like that can end up costing a lot that would be better spent on others.

I wouldn't care what happened to someone burglaring me either lol.

I wouldn't be setting traps though, things could back fire, get the wrong person.

If people care what happens to burgers then leave yer door unlocked so less chance of them cutting themselves breaking window etc.

Think police view it as petty crime so unlikely to follow up to hard, plus judges just hand out wet bus tickets, reason why people getting fed up.

I am firstly a New Zealander.. but according to the census forms I am a New Zealand European. I was born here (mid 1970s) and I am 'white'

It makes me so angry when Dairies and Service Stations are being robbed, usually for stupid Cigarettes (not a smoker), and a little cash (not worth the risk, really)

Typically these jobs are not highly paid. The risk / reward ratio is not good.

Its complete bollocks that these people are getting robbed / hurt with little recourse.

I don't know what the fix is, but the current method is not working.

Edit.. I would like to see the robbers heads explode. Shotguns should do it. If you are going to bash someone for cigarettes, then prepare for some high speed lead poisoning.

Well since the national government was in power for last 9 years, I think you can add "left-liberal " to "populist right wing"...

The census form doesn't define your ethnicity - it presents you with options where you can define yourself.

65,000 people chose to identify themselves as a "New Zealander".

I'd be perfectly okay with dairy owners being allowed to keep a loaded shotgun under counter with legal authorisation to blow away anyone who tries to rob them.

I now look forward to the soapbox crowd delivering me a lecture on what is the Right And Proper thing to do.

What you are doing is incredibly dangerous, and I believe extremely illegal. I would imagine you would be charged with various crimes including manslaughter if someone died.
