This seems to have been kept fairly quiet, Optus D11 has been delayed until the END of 2025

https://www.nzx.com/announcements/407185

The Optus D2 is currently there alongside Optus D1 at 160E, it  has moved there from 152E. I have seen a document saying that Sky is switching to Optus D2 On Wednesday and Thursday morning.

There is Nothing on their twitter or Facebook about it, and the same goes for Freeview.

Usually these events take place over night and not noticed by anyone, this one appears to scheduled from 9 am Wednesday morning.

I expect Sky will say viewers won't be aware or affected by the swapover and first we will hear about it is a "spin" press release from Sky saying they successfully transitioned over to a backup Optus satellite to ensure viewers maintained a %100 reliable quality service.

Hi Craig, thanks for that, yes I got the notification from Sky late last week and wondered what had happened to D11, very little (read zilch) online about its delay, but not unexpected, so much software to define I guess :) I also noted a couple of weeks back folk starting to talk of D2 stalking up on D1.

Optus-11 (D11) was announced in 2021 as to be launched on an Ariane-6 "in 2023" (https://spacenews.com/arianespace-to-launch-australian-optus-11-on-ariane-6/), however Ariane-6 is running waaaay late.

According to the NSF Forum ESA Launch Schedule (https://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=6114.msg2470380#msg2470380), Optus-11 is due to be launched "2024 TBD" on an Ariane-64

That makes a 2025 in service date entirely plausible

Why switch to D2 now? Are there more issues with D1 we aren't aware of?

Sky needs more capacity so is some of the existing D1 beams can be re-configured to provide more DVB-S2 capacity this would make sense.

Optus D1 I think is EOl 2024 , the submission above says Optus 11 replacement is delayed until end of 2025. It usually take  month or two after testing in orbit at a new location then moved and swapover takes place. So actual date of use may be as far away as jan /feb 2026.

Optus D2 went up at end of 2007 and started use in Feb 2008, its nearly as old as D1.

I expect both will stay parked there, with one being backup for the other. With D2 moving, its been noted that a number of satelliites have had increased activity. Horizons 3E (intelsat) at 169E and Eutelsat 172B at (172) have had feeds on them in the past few days. Feeds that would normally have been on Optus D2

Sky is now using Optus D2 at 160E and Optus D1 is moving most likely on iits way to 152 (the old Optus D2 slot)

Strangely no sharemarket announcement..

A bit odd that there was just a swap over. Only technical difference i can see is that D2 has a higher solar capacity. Anyone heard what the reason is for the switch?

Had lost signal message ~11am today.  Could be related to switchover.

Box reset cleared it

I thiink D2 has more life left in it. Also moving D1 wasnt just because of Sky NZ. ABC/SBS Channel7 Australia all use it for distribution to terrestrial transmitters.

I cancelled Sky a few months back and yesterday had someone run a line from the sat dish to a smart TV that used to have VTV attached.

When tuning it in he used Optus D1. There was a glitch after he left so he is coming back during the week. Should he be tuning it to D2 or does this change only apply to those who have Sky.

Think of D2 as being a virtual D1, as long as parameters match then TV tuner has no idea of any difference.

Hi Eva, no it should be set to scan Optus D1, that detail refers to the transmitted mux setups which with respect to Sky and Freeview services are as transmitted from the ground station, the sat is simply a bent pipe in the sky.

Otherwise every sky and Freeview box in the country would need re scanning, and they did not as in essence what was transmitted did not change, and transponder mapping difference between D1s setup and D2, would have been managed to make D2 like D1 was
