iphone is just a beautiful apple, nothing special, i prefect my x01ht from softband, at least i could use it be a mobile phone, television, remote control, camera, video recorder, gamer, book reader, remote harddisk, MP3 + MP4... ... TOO MUCH FOR IT

I don't think you can really compare the two. The N95 is focused on functionality whereas the iPhone is focused on usability.

There is a captive market for both of these devices.

Yes, a good point and I hadn't thought of it like that. I certainly wouldn't buy an iPhone (as I see it's limited features) but I can see now that people would because of the UI/design. Not everyone's as concerned with features I guess!

My iPhone unlock solution should be arriving in a few days. Will be nice to make calls on the phone using my existing sim.

We all know javascript is not the fastest thing in the world. Benchmarks are out now.

Javascript in MobileSafari runs around eighty times slower than on a 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo Mac. Native ARM code runs some 200 times faster than Javascript in the iPhone. Lots of unused power there with the restriction on what code can be run on a device.

And yes, while some people may be able to in the near future install something, not everyone is a hacker in the sense of being able to even follow easy instructions to install applications...

I would consider an iPhone the day a SDK is out and people can run anything they want.

Here's some opinions on the whole no-SDK thing from a high profile Cocoa developer:

I especially like this bit, which pretty much sums it up at the moment:

I became a Mac developer so I could program in Cocoa, not because I have some inherent love for objects with a big Apple on them. If I wanted to program in a crappy language just so I could get more customers, I'd switch to Windows, not stinking JavaScript. Cocoa has EIGHTEEN YEARS of design and evolution behind it from some of the brightest people in the business. It's famous for being fast, concise, and powerful. JavaScript was thrown together by some dudes a couple years ago to make web pages kind of, like, do sh*t and stuff. It's famous for being slow, hard to read, hard to program, and incompatible across different platforms.

Thanks for the link. Read the post. Interesting. And here's the thing: I use other platform because of the large number of applications actually available for them (Windows Mobile, Symbian).

I linked to a test that shows that Javascript as used on the iPhone is too slow and native code is faster.

Read it again. The blog post you linked is basically saying "AJAX and Javascript suck, they are slow and abhorrent frameworks to develop on so I (the blog author) will wait until something comes".

Where is this different from my point of view as a consumer?

I think that on your way to defend the iPhone you missed some of the bits in my post. But I understand some people make Apple their religion. That's fine. Sometimes I too think getting a MacBook to run Parallels would made it for a faster and mean Windows machine than some of my hardware here.

And here's another interesting quote from the same article you linked, one that I think is even more interesting than your selected one:

Us programming in AJAX while Apple programs in real OS X is basically a case of Apple not eating its own dogfood, except that JavaScript isn't dogfood, it's dog shit.

- Pretty much all the cool stuff I'd want to write for an iPhone can't be written inside the straightjacket of AJAX:

See? It's a limitation on the current design. Let's just hope the next iteration is better.

No, I was agreeing with you to a certain extent, not defending the iPhone in this area.

But the upside is, it's just a software update to fix.

- have you applied the latest iPhone update and would it lock it again?

Don't have time at the moment to play with APN's etc, i'll look at that tonight. I suspect it won't be a problem.

Yes, i've updated to the latest firmware v1.0.2

If you've gone through the jailbreak, and installing ssh etc, You have to restore the iPhone, rather than update, then reapply all those hacks / modifications again.

But they all still work with the new firmware, it's just a pain having to reapply them all from scratch again.
