Unfortunately, it IS compulsory. I phoned a CSR just now to make sure.

In addition to a Broadband plan, you have to sign up/currently be on either of the following:

- A YouChoose mobile plan (our whole family is on PrePay now)

- Any of Talk 1/2/3 calling plans

It's a real bummer that they are now insisting on this requirement, as otherwise I would have signed up for sure. The kids and my missus all thought it was a great idea

manhinli: If only that had held on to their previous packs of included talk 2 into the Ultimate pack Red... that would really give Vodafone a heap of a lot more customers...

That's not true if you follow the normal sign up. It's only the "free broadband 'till the end of 08" offer which required a 12mth contract and either talk 1+ or You Choose.

I think that CSR was crazy - you need at least one calling plan from this list:

standard
talk 1
talk 2
talk 2 nz+aus
talk 3

Standard is free, and I can pass the sign up with flying colours by selecting this.

Thanks for explaining, I got it now

So, I lose out on the $30 per month discount till the end of '08 costing me $195 approximately...

And in return I save 15 x 12 = $180 over the next 12 months.

Hmmm, it might be better to go for the Talk 1 plan after all

Not as bad as Telecom offering Broadband Plans with a 200MB Data cap & then 2cents per MB thereafter. Before you say it, yes my statement is related to the topic, because you have made a point about how pathetic 1GB of Data usuage is, whereas Telecom offer FAR worse & are trying to entice people to move away from Dialup.

This will only result in the customer losing out big time with huge bills & Telecom know this very well, hence the way they marketed this whole plan & it's very promotion in all media.

At least with Vodafone's 1GB Plan, you have the option of surfing out the rest of the month at dial up speeds, or "double your data for another $5" at full speed.

Maurcio, if it's ok for you to hack down VF's Plans, then it's only natural that other people will compare plans/data caps with other Telco's/ISP's isn't it?

After all, face to conversation works exactly like this, so why can't this be done on a forum, after all, it was not completely OT.

Look, at the end of the day, I'm not going to continue down this path any further, because you or another moderator will hit the ban button. But, for the record, you made a statement & as a result I replied with my take, by comparing with another Telco/ISP, (which people do all the time I might add) & just because it went "marginally OT", you jump in literally seconds later & slam dunk the whole affair!

Just relax mate, at the end of the day no harm has come to the world or you personally has it?

My family doesn't use over 20GB in an average month, but quite a lot of people do use over 50GB and (sometimes 100GB

) easily, which I don't find surprising.

Anything from videos to gaming to just downloading files (like updates...) can use up quite a lot (and that's not just for download, uploads do count too)

Can I just say, in the nicest possible way, that this is a really stupid thing to say. Since when was there any moral obligation on an internet user's part to 'leave some for everyone else'? Do you get pissed off at the person who buys the last 4-pack of V at the Supermarket? Or is it the Supermarket's fault for not stocking enough?

Exactly.

If you think someone is being 'greedy' by using 40 gigs a month (bearing in mind you have no idea what they're using the data for) then your qualm, good sir, should be with your ISP for not providing the network capacity to cater for heavy users.

As far as I'm concerned, if you're willing to pay for it, use as much data as you like. Leave moral obligation to the Greenpeaces of this world.

A few years ago, as I understand it, my d/l speed was affected by other users at Ihug downloading excessive data.

If I am wrong with this comment, I apologise and withdraw my earlier comment.

What would be predictable is that you would post Vodafone is the greatest thing since sliced bread...

It's ok to hack down a plan, there is no reason to compare to othe company's plans. We are talking Vodafone, we are not talking Telecom or TelstraClear. Is it hard to understand?

My dsl has being down since thursday, so I have being using the 1 gig on my phone. No torrenting, no youtubing, no vimeo, etc.

Its bloody hard. Im at 400 megs, and I have done _nothing_ that I would normally do. I have about 40 tabs open on the desktop pc of things to watch on youtube and vimeo when the dsls working, Havent even being browsing torrent sites for new things to download.

So if I do 100 megs a day doing virtually nothing, then thats about 3 times what a 1 gig plan will get you over a month.

1 gig will get you not much in the way of online video, particually on the non crap looking sites. Its a pointless thing going broadband with a 1 gig cap IMO, and then the vodafone plans have nothing to make it so you can use more on an occasional basis.

I know people who have an xnet connection at their batch, so that they arent paying for data when they are not there, the lowest plan is ok to leave there all the time. None of these games with predicting your usage like vodafone like to make their cellular uses do, and are now bringing to their ADSL offering.

Look at it this way, for them to be putting in their own gear into the exchange, I expect them to deliver exciting new revolutionary pricing plans. Not almost exactly the same as they and other ISPs have being offering for years on the wholesaled network. IMO its a complete waste of paper that the pressreleases were printed on since the end users will see zero benifit from it.

Sure I agree a 1GB plan is very very minimal but there is a whole lot of web users out there who only turn their PC on every few days to send a few emails and look at the odd website and for them 1GB is more than enough. Tell them they have 5, 10 whatever GB to burn and they think they are wasting their money paying for bandwidth they don't use, tell them they have 1GB and if they use 800MB then they are happy to have used what they pay for.

No-one can call themselves a geek if they only use that much though of course ;-)

I think you're failing to take into account just how many people aren't yet on broadband and for whom 1GB is ample as an entry level product.

Telecom's clearly done its research and decided 200MB is enough for a beginner plan - we're offering five times the data for the same price (more or less) as entry level and we've had a huge response to it. A large percentage of the customers signing up for our free broadband offer have been new to broadband. Not new to Vodafone or new to the internet but new to broadband. That's significant I think because it means there is still a huge market for people who want to find out what all the fuss is about. As you know, once you're on broadband it's impossible to put up with dial-up ever again.

And once you're using broadband you find new ways to use up the data. I spent three years working from home and only once broke through 1GB of data for the month. That was six years ago - today I rarely dip under 10GB a month. Six years from now my whole household will be using the one connection for all manner of things and I doubt I'll be getting by with any less than 50-100GB a month.

The point is, there is a market for low-data-cap entry level products. They may not suit the average Geekzone user, but there's a home for them just the same.
