Vodafone's Red Network

3 Plans, all Max/Max ADSL2+ (upto 24mbit), 1GB, 5GB, 20GB with extra data blocks available

I like the address checker they use which is built into google maps, shows the footprint of each exchange, even the areas they don't plan to service for a while

This sounds really good. I think I'll sign up for it.
We hardly ever use the phone at home so it doesn't matter if we lose it due to "teething trouble"

1 GB plan? A Mac OS update would use almost half of this per month! Why offer this kind of plan on a max speed service?

Woo hoo!  I am in the coverage area for service in June 2008, this month!  I am going to call Vodafone up as I am already with them for home and broadband and see what they have to say.

I have to also ask them about Sky Online, which I have tried, but the download got counted towards my monthly limit, will be interesting to check as ADSL2+ speeds make this much more viable.

I will post back tonight...

WooT, i'm in the red zone!

I don't see any advantage of being in the red zone compared with anywhere else?

Are the plans just the same?

Same price, data cap and phoneline package as current wholesale plans except the red zone is ADSL2+ where as the current plans are advertised* as 7.6mbit/128kbps for 1GB & 5GB (realistically 4.5mbit/128kbps) and 7.6mbit/800kbps for 20GB.

That's the only difference I can find so far - all this unbundling just to blow your cap faster :P

Where's this so called revolution of broadband Orcon and Vodafone? not a lot has changed has it.. atleast Orcon has offered a price decrease when using their unbundled service ($20/month difference between gold plans).

* I say advertised because this is what their website says, unsure if Vodahug is ratelimiting connections on Telecom ADSL2 gear

The main 'advantage' (actually difference) is that you are using Vodafone's equipment at the exchange, as opposed to sharing Telecom's hardware.  Wheather or not this makes a difference in the end to how fast your connection is is still depedant upon line distance etc.  I love how the site (RedNetwork) lists two of the 'advantages' as:

Better Value - How is that, the prices are the same as their existing plans!
Better Service - Well unless they have a dedicated team helping RedNetwork customers, I doubt that.  Maybe the CSR's for these customers are NZ based ;-)

Because ISPs in NZ have to stick to the unwritten rule that bandwidth caps must remain as small as possible of course :P

Call me Mr Thickie, but I can't see where you sign up on their website.
I guess you have to call them up, which will mean it'll be ages before I get around to doing it

It seems Vodafone have changed their Red Network plans! The last time I checked (last night), the Red Network plans came free with Talk 1 (on their Ideal bundle), and Talk 2 (on their Ultimate bundle). And this was the differentiating point between the Red Network plans, and the standard plans.

But it seems they're all the same no. So essentially "better value" is not quite true now...

Well, being on Ultimate right now and with ADSL2+ gear at my exchange, and yes, I have a 7.6mbps connection.

Now that they completely removed the pages from the site and trashed the idea of including talk 1 or 2 with the plans, the Red plans just aren't that appetising.

At least they should add more value to their Red plans! (more data, cheaper pricing, more services etc)

Are the details of the LLU plans even there? all I can seem to find is just the coverage checker.
Other thing is I've checked my address in it and it has me being on the Frankton exchange in Hamilton when I'm actually on the Te Rapa exchange (right on the dead end of its reach, there is a frankton exchange cabnet across the road from here)

The Red plans are hidden except at the sign up site - so you'll need to enter your address to check what plans are available.

The Red plans are as follows (as of my research):

  • Home phone Red: $40
Home phone features and calling plans: same as normal
  • Dial up Red: $10
  • Easy pack Red: $70 (1GB, Max/Max ADSL2+, home phone included)
  • Ideal pack Red: $80 (5GB, Max/Max ADSL2+, home phone included)
  • Ultimate pack Red: $90 (20GB, Max/Max ADSL2+, home phone included)

Well my address is within coverage range, but I couldn't for the life of me find the 'Sign Up' button - anyone care to link me?

I actually just rang Vodafone and they said it isn't currently possible for existing customers to sign up to the Red Network, only new customers, and they'll be migrating existing customers towards the end of the year (??!). I thought this all sounded a bit ridiculous but the CSR assured me the only people who could currently access the service "while we are still ironing out bugs" were new customers.

I have to ask, if they're still ironing out bugs, and long-term ihug customers like myself can't sign up, why is the service being advertised?

What?????? I was thinking about changing Home phone to Red...

Maybe that's why removed "Change Account Type" under the Internet section in My Vodafone.

Sign up links are on the plan pages (e.g. home phone, broadband packs, dial up)
