Telecom's backhaul is dimensioned so that if everyone uses the circuit at the same time (unlikely), they'll get around 24kbit/s. That's not guaranteed though. ISPs get 24kbit/s per user and CUBS instance - 10 users, they get 240kbit/s on the PVC, 100, 240kbit/s, 1,000, 2,4Mbit/s etc.

I collated all the data on this forum into a spreadsheet, including dates times rated speed up/down and actual speed up/down.

Its not very scientific, but the results are interesting nonetheless. I am only going to post a couple of download averages, because most of the rest of the data is not really of interest to this topic.

I found upload speeds to be pretty constant (and good), except for 512k upload plans that had far too small a sample.

256K and 1024k download plans were also under represented, although their results showed that they were getting pretty much what they pay for (actual speed was plus or minus around 5% of the rated speed).

Non ADSL users have been excluded because their number of samples per connection type was too low to produce meaningful averages.

Full rate ADSL users have been excluded because there are very few of you, and I am jealous of the speeds you are getting.

Any super-odd results that didnt have explanations have also been deleted.

2Mbps ADSL average download speed was 1540kbps (14 samples)
3.5Mbps ADSL average download speed was 2467kbps (26 samples)

If I remove some obvious very low congested results, the results for 2Mbps get very close to 1800kbps average.

This is probably why a lot of users who upgraded to 3.5Mbit/s getting slower speeds. And telecom uses DSLAMs with a 2Mbps backhaul in rural areas, so it is impossible to get over 2Mbit/s. Seriously how can telecom get away with its “faster cheaper broadband” campaign?

Thanks for starting this thread Aloha. Its been a good basic indicator of what might be happening.

I have decided to ask users for more organised information, lets see if we can get more results with better quality information.

I've just gotten off the phone with Xtra helpdesk.
After querying why my speed hadn't changed I was told that if you were on one of the older plans with the higher UPLOAD speed (I was on 2MB/196) then you won't get changed onto the new plans automaically, you actually have to ring up and request this to be changed. If you were on one of the more recent plans (2MB/128) then it would happen automaically.
Bring on the new speed in the next couple of days!

hey i was just wondering, in my moden settings it says my connection to the exchange etc. is that the limiting factor on my max speed? cuz im on the 3.5mb/128 explorer plan from telecom and the connection to exchange speed has never past 1.8mb. cant do a dl test now as im capped. how big can the speed be reduced as distance increases form exchanges?

also, is there like a site where is tells you all the exhcange locations or do i have to call up telecom to find out. just recently got adsl
