I use a desktop XPP machine at home and a laptop Vista machine when out and about and I want to invest (not too much) in an application that will facilitate keeping my files synchronized between the 2. Ideally this solution will also incorporate an online backup component as well but that may have to be taken care of with a different application (hopefully not).

It is likely to be my whole My Documents folder that I sync/backup, excluding music, videos and pictures if it is going to an online backup as well (for obvious reasons). The amount of data is likely to be 5 - 10GB, up to 70GB or so if photos and music are included (would be nice).

Mauricio has mentioned the following options but I would really like to pursue the integrated backup to a 3rd (online) location option too. Can anyone suggest anything or give feedback on the below apps?

As discussed during th Geekzone chat session, these are all good solutions. FolderShare is the only really automatic one - and free. But it needs to be running on both PCs, so it won't be any good for backup in the cloud, like using Xdrive.

Xdrive gives 5GB free (same as SkyDrive Live) but its software allows it to be mounted as a mapped drive, so you can use local sync programs to sync files to it. Very handy.

If you are using manual sync then I vote for Goodsync or SyncToy.

So at the end I voted for all the software you listed. It depends if you need/want backup online or not.

Yeah, good sync is great. I use it all the time to keep a USB flash drive in sync with my PC (for backups). Its really quick too!

Depending on your usage and how many files you are talking about you can probably use the free copy. Its worth hunting around as Goodsync goes by a few different names and each has a "free" version BUT the limitaions are different with each one.
