Hi all,

My name is Thomas, and I'm the Chief Technical Officer at Orcon. We have been investigating reports of slows international speeds for some time now, and we've done some fairly extensive work, particularly over the last 3 nights. I'd like to seek some feedback regarding the results of this work.

We have been performing speed tests to various sites from UBS DSL and LLU connections. These are specific sites that users like yourselves have reported slowness to, some of which include:

http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/x86_64/iso/
http://www.objectpark.net/mcc.html
http://www.download.com
http://sourceforge.net/
http://www.nba.com
http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/
http://nds1.nokia.com/files/support/global/phones/software/NokiaSoftwareUpdaterSetup_en.exe

Plus various other HTTP and FTP sites as well.

This evening we've noticed a fairly significant improvement to most of the above sites, plus a general improvement in all-round "feel". I'd be keen to get some feedback from members here as to their experience - whether you too have noticed improvement this evening; if some sites have improved but other haven't; or if nothing has changed. It would be particularly useful if people could post links to actual sites or files that they are having problems with.

Thanks in advance for your help with this - we're as keen as you all are to get this nailed and speeds back to their normal greatness...

cheers
thomas

Nice to see another person form Orcon here!

Well I was going to say that "https://panel.dreamhost.com" was still loading really slow, but it seems to be loading fine now!

Yesterday the speed was still a bit all over the place but today it seems to be pretty ok. (back to normal)

If I find some international sites loading slow again, ill let you know.

I've tried the sites mentioned above and a couple of others and got a very mixed bag.

From here http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/fedora/linux/releases/9/Fedora/x86_64/iso/ I tried two downloads. One was at 838.8KB/s and another was 10.1KB/s

The NBA site video was extremely slow to download, I actually thought it had frozen until I noticed the traffic meter on Zone-alarm plodding along. It did eventually play after it had downloaded but wouldn't stream.

Hope this helps.

Ok, so all appears to be fine at the moment 6:07am Saturday morning :) Locally things just feel quicker, overseas websites are pretty quick to load and WoW seems to be better, will wait until peak time I guess. But so far it's good.

Thanks for coming along, I appreciate you engaging with the community.  I typically experience these performance issues during more peak times, I am having no issues at present but I'm sure the overall bandwidth usage is less at 7am on a Saturday than at 7pm on any given day.
I appreciate that you guys are making some efforts and hopefully a resolution is in sight, if you have made changes late Friday I won't be able to identify any difference until later today.  I'll post my results then.

International speeds seem a bit slow at the moment
Both downloads started at about 10KB/s then moved up to 50KB/s then to 100KB/s then 50KB/s and just stays between 50-100KB/s

Both these sites used to go at 400KB/s
I downloaded a file from a NZ host and it went at 400KB/s

Sure 100KB/s is bearable for browsing but not for downloading.

Okay - I tried these links just now, and these were my results:

These were from a UBS line. I realised later that there was a torrent running at approx 150kbps in the background at the same time as well.

What IP address are you currently assigned? Do you know what exchange you're connected to? Email me direct if you'd prefer not to post details here.

cheers
thomas

Hi everyone - we have carried out some further work today. I'd like to hear how people are finding things now. Remeber to provide some specific examples of files you are downloading or urls/sites that are slow. Also your IP address, username, and exchange (if you know it) would be useful.

PS - if you message me privately please allow replys.

cheers

Ok, some of them are faster.

The list goes on...

1: This one is still slow Frown

2: This one seems to be back to normal (altho it does kinda jump around with the speed, it used to go at a constant 400KB/s (or what ever my max speed was at the time.))

3: This is a different mirror form firefox and still slow.

4&5: Slow as well, (both HTTP and FTP)
