IMHO I don't think skype will work at all with the way Orcon are shaping/altering/ delaying traffic:(
Trying to download an update to Nero at the moment and I'm getting a massive 6Kbytes per second. Thats dial up speeds.

To add insult to injury I got a massively expensive mailout from Orcon trying to get my to sign up to their LLU services... I don't think that I'll be taking them up on their offer.

Hi again everyone. Further changes were made last night (well, this morning - between 1am and 3am). From our testing this has further improved things, although feedback from yourselves and our other customers is still the best gauge we have of actual performance. In particular, changes should improve:

- HTTP downloads
- VoIP traffic such as ventrilo
- Gaming traffic such as second life

Again - I'd like to hear feedback, good and bad, about these changes and what impact they've had on performance. Please post links to specific files if you can.

OK, Yes it does look like you have fixed some of the speed issues, but not all, these are still downloading at 30-70KB/s

And will download at about 300-400KB/s thou a US proxy.

This is one of the sites which are still slow: (100-300KB/s the speeds moves around alot, might just be the server)

generally speaking my HTTP speeds are about 10-20 times faster now except for these 2:

both get 50kbps or lower!

Nope. Orcon hasn't operated a web cache for many years. The extremely minor gains they deliver don't offset the issues they tend to introduce.

Things are looking better at my end.
The nero update that last night would only download at 6kbytes per second came down at 612kbytes per sec, a 100x improvement.

Thanks for the ongoing work.

Update: I spoke to soon. Still can't sustain a 64kbit stream from the BBC replay radio site (drops to 32kbits) and youtube is unusable. Tracert below.

It is intolerable, and a borderline breach of fair trading standards to have these problems on Orcon's network, but advertise on your status page that no problems exist.

It is a matter of fact that international downloads are being and/or have been seriously throttled.

I tried downloading Windows XP Service Pack 3 - and was getting 7Kbytes/sec. The file was an .exe. Downloading the file to a VPS hosted in the states under my control took only a minute or so.

I made two copies of the file. One named sp3.exe, the other just sp3.

Using wget, the sp3.exe was downloading at 7KB/s, while just sp3, was downloading at 190KB/s.

Clearly, one of your black box bandwidth management toys is deliberately inspecting, and manipulating my data transfers.

I have no fundalmental problem with this. I have a serious problem with your status page being completely inaccurate.

Question. Do your technical team update the status page - or should I offer a guess that it is your marketing team instead?

Seriously, this is not a service I'm prepared to pay for.

I guess you have to pick your battles. Me, I just signed up with another ISP today. Far simpler than refusing to pay.

I telecommute with a Florida-based company, and I just can't keep making excuses for my lower productivity. So I have to ditch Orcon just to stay productive.

The only thing keeping me here at the moment is having a static IP.
I'm looking for another ISP that can give me fs/fs with a static IP. And yes Iam prepared to pay the $20 surcharge most ISPs charge for a static IP (I need it for work) . This is really got beyond a joke.

The static IP issue was a factor for me too, but in the end, I figured using a dynamic DNS client like DNS4me, DNS2go or similar was a sacrifice I would make for decent Internet.

We have fairly strict rules regarding inbound vpns for support people and they require static IPs.
The annoying thing is that the vpn works very well, its just anything on the net that involves streaming media or downloading executable content is complete crap. IMHO Orcon is being overzealous in their bandwidth shaping.

Time to abandon ship I think and find another ISP.
Annoying as I've been with Orcon for over 2 year now and it will be quite inconvient but their service really is crap at the moment.

Yes it sure would be nice to get some more updates on this from Orcon, Orcon is acting as if they don't exist they just accept our payments and leave us with crap internet speeds, no updates on there site no nothing :(

And trust me if I could I would of left Orcon over 2 weeks ago but my dad seems to like giving away his money for nothing! :( (really just because he doesn't use the internet much and we have a 1 year free phone line with them, but they are ripping us off on internet bills!!!)
