Just received an email with the usual marketing double speak, with the effect that westpac will soon disable their westpac pay app on android. Very annoying having recently upgraded two phones on our household, both using this app for payment.
Would be interested to know what other credit cards have a payment app on android, on the basis that switching card provider is more appealing than switching phones

this was not a option given.

You’ll still be able to use your physical Westpac debit or credit cards for contactless payments, wherever you see the contactless payment symbol.

Are they going to just support Google Pay or something? Not familiar with Westpac's offerings, my cards are with ASB and (to date, at least) they've been pretty on to it with offering Things That Help Me.

one would assume if they were dropping westpac pay and moving to google pay they would have simply said this in the email instead of pissing everyone off who uses it with only 2 weeks notice

to stop using and delete the app.

It looks like it that is the intention for Westpac Australia but I have never been able to add my NZ card to Google Pay. I just checked and that is still the case so I'll be waiting to see if there is a further announcement.

FYI, Westpac Australia has already removed the Australian app:

https://www.westpac.com.au/faq/tap-and-pay-removed/

Why has Westpac Tap & Pay been removed?

We’ve removed this as more customers choose to use Google Pay and Samsung Pay. To continue using your smartphone for payments, add your eligible Mastercard to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay.

I thought the OP wanted to use their phone in place of their credit card. I can do that with ASB / Android / NFC.

doesn't look like westpac is one of the banks that support Google Pay.

So, does this mean contactless payments via a phone with Westpac are out? Seems like a backward step.

Only banks that support Google Pay are ANZ, ASB & BNZ

Yes - OP had asked for other working credit card solutions. I presume there are other options but I can confirm that I use ANZ VISA with Google Pay NFC on Android.

Might be a controversial opinion but I had constant issues with Westpac pay when I had my S20+ and my OP8 so I'm glad it's gone.

Was told in an e-mail months ago when inquring on how to resolve this that at some point it was no longer going to be supported. Seems like the day has come.

fearandloathing:

This is not a solution as some people do not like iPhones.

Which is absolutely fine and understandable.

Also this is not about iOS this is about Android.

& as stated in the post, he'd rather switch banks than switch phones. I wonder if banks ever did consider phone brand loyalty as a factor in why customers leave?

The westpac pay app is a disgrace.
It has never been reliable for me. I think I've had it work ONCE in the dozen or so times I've tried to use it over 3ish years and two phones.
Every other time it either won't log in, or just doesn't work.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll wait a few weeks and see what next for westpac, but this is a very annoying move by them.
