We use our regular sky box for watching sport and that's it. Anything else we use the Apple TV.

Is there any benefit for using the new box over the old if you're not using any of the apps?

Wouldn't you be better off ditching the box altogether and getting Sky Sport Now for the Apple TV?

Ive heard SSN has improved but the last time I tried it I vowed to just use the box for PQ alone.

We've looked in to it over the years but the picture quality has never been as good as the satellite feed. How does it compare these days?

I would rate the ppicture quality of SSN now as acceptable. They finally moved to 50fps from 25fps but the bit rate is still too low, especially for H.264 encoding. Its not as good as satellite but its much better than what it used to be. I would put it on par with Kayo sports which is about 6.5 to 7Mb/s bit rate. If they could up it to ~9 to 10Mb/s and move to H.265 encoding then the PQ would be comparable to satellite.

I have discovered another bug with the New Skybox.  If you are watching a program, press the android assistant button and say "Set volume up by 50%" or anything else, you will miss some of the program because the Sky Logo screen covers the program you are currently watching.  That wouldn't be so bad but it also removes any ability to rewind to see what you have missed.  The rewind button just goes back to the spot after the assistant returned to your program.  I and many others have pointed out bugs, missing features and bad UI features in feed back and on this and other forums.

We've had a problem develop recently that the new box just seems to 'stall' - it can take over a minute after powering on or changing a channel to be able to change channels or go to planner, etc. It's pretty unusable.. sigh, now to deal with tech support. Sky recently sent us a survey on the new sky box experience ... good timing, didn't hold back...

I think I have found a fix, and I've sent these steps to Sky support.

The good news is that no recordings are lost in doing this process.

I have Developer options enabled on my New sky box. I don't know if you need to have them enabled to do this fix.

  • Go to My Hub > Android Settings > Apps > See all apps > Show system Apps > Sky STB
  • Select ‘Clear cache’ (this step might not be needed - I tried it first and it made no difference)
  • Select ‘Uninstall updates’
  • This will downgrade the Sky STB app to 2.22.34-tv (not the OOBE version, but two versions old)
  • The New Sky Box will reconnect to satellite services and bring up the connect Sky account screen with QR Code
  • Connect to your Sky account
  • Go to My Hub > Android Settings > Device preferences
  • Select ‘Restart’
  • Once the restart is complete, the Sky STB app will update to the latest version (currently 2.26.52-tv)

Since I’ve done this, the box is way more responsive, even for video rewind etc (and oh why oh why doesn't this box have a stop button?)

I've had the new Sky box for a month or two, after the old one died. There are problems.

Fast forward at +64 doesn't go at that speed, and seems to crash the programme. I now avoid anything above +16.

On TV One on demand, after an ad break, sometimes the picture doesn't come back - leaving a black screen - though the soundtrack continues. I reverse to the programme just before the ad break and the programme continues correctly from there.

The TV guide is clunky and slower to refresh than on the old box.

Thanks everyone for their feedback. Fair to say we won't be taking Sky up on their free upgrade offer!

Good to see that the latest Sky STB app update at least removes the annoying "<-Back" display at the top left of the screen when FFWD/REWDing. i.e. It no longer displays over the Rugby score and Motorsport lap count.

Unfortunately the display is still dimmed when FFWD/REWDing which is annoying.

Still waiting for the ability to enter in the number of minutes to skip when viewing a large recording. e.g. Golf.
e.g. Keying 180 to jump to 3 hours into the recording. The old sky box had this functionality.

Ross.

Would love to be able to do that on the Sky Pod too rather than having to fast forward say 7 hours to get to the last hour of something like the final round of golf.

We generally wait until 6.30pm to start watching Newshub so we can fast forward the ads and anything we are not interested in. The last two nights we have been unable to watch the news on playback while recording and for some reason we seem to lose the section from 6pm to where we try to start watching. Very odd as it has been ok for months.

I do miss the old MySky box.

They still send them out as replacements for defective sky boxes . My family member got sent one last week to replace an old box that the hardrive failed on. Thank god it was an old box sent as a replacement not the new one. They must have refurbished ones in stock

They still do supply the Hard Disk style boxes, but try and push the new device on to you first. My Sky+ Box died at Christmas (of course) and it took almost a month to get a replacement and they said initially I wouldn’t be able to get a 1Tb box. The customer service was just atrocious.

I was an early adapter and paid $150 as a MySkyer. Didn't take long to realise that is was so much inferior to the box I sent back.

After a couple of weeks demanded that I get a MySky box back and it arrived. A smaller box with a bigger HD. It was so wonderful to get it back.

Recording F1 and Indy and able to go forward 60 minutes or whatever to by-pass the preamble. Fast forward while still able to see the pictures.

Call me an old fogey (which as a 75 y/o I will be soonish) but I know what a crock of shyte is and the internet fed box is it.

We listen to the Nat Prog and so easy to just dial it up. Still the most eclectic music and fed through a decent amp is so good.

One issue not resolved was my request to refund my $150 for the new box as being Not Fit For Purpose.
