They are not charging Sky Sport viewers any more just to watch the Lion's tour. The point I was trying to make was that by removing daily and weekly passes and marking up the monthly pass to $99 is that they are going to charge more just because the Lion's tour is next month. I fully expect Fan Pass prices will drop back to what they are now after the tour is finished.

I would not expect this at all. You can see in this thread that currently monthly subs will be getting it at the same cost till feb 2018 (as long as they keep their sub current). If sky/fanpass were expecting to drop the price right after the tour finished then they would not have put that feb 2018 in their emails.

And he hit the nail on the head. The decision wasnt about content or access it was specificlally about sport content. And if read correctly the ComCom report said that Vodafone cant buy Sky cos it will have a potential impact on sport content for consumers in the future. And in saying so the report basicially implied that no other NZ company, whether they be in a related industry or not, cant buy Sky cos that would have a potential impact on sport content for consumers in the future.

And no other overseas company could buy or merge with Sky cos...... well you get the picture. A narrowly defined market means no possible transaction and no change for consumers other than hoping someone else will grow some cojones and bid for content.

This is a good write up and he does know what he is talking about. NZ is small small market and little interest to big companies (just look at google not selling phones here, apple running everything from AU etc). If a big media company buys the rights it does not mean they have to supply NZ viewers with the games. Just think if some company picked up the rights to a sports that you enjoyed then did not show it in NZ, sure their might be ways to view it online somehow but not legally. Wonder how many people would be upset then.

And it does show that Sky isn't bad, isn't rorting, it is stuck between a rock and a hard place as we are. If Sky was taken over by Spark, Mitre 10, Harringtons Breweries, nothing changes, as the problem is external to us and Sky. Sky just happens to be the conduit that we pay bills to, and therefore are seen as the first port of call

ComCom wouldnt allow Sky to be taken over by Spark. Or, as it seems to be, anyone else. By virtue of the position that the company and its shareholders have built in the NZ marketplace.

It actually comes down to the voters of NZ, eg the public. But certainly there is a lot of grumbling going on about it.

We do have an election this year after all. Not sure if they want it to be another election issue, although I guess it will take peoples minds off the housing crisis. I could be a cheap distraction for the government to legislate to get the rights for all nationally significant sports.

Ah the fallacy of nationally significant sports and anti-siphoning. Great vote grabber but it takes years to repair the damage.

The current situation with Cricket Australia is absolutely fascinating. It looks like CA will be lucky to get the same level of revenue for cricket rights given anti-siphoning provisions in Australia. Contrast that with AFL and NFL bodies who are making money hand-over-fist with media rights. At least CA will get more revenue from Big Bash League given its not a "nationally significant sport".

So Channel Ten cant afford to buy the cricket rights, Channel Seven doesnt want them and the only buyer left is Channel Nine. The wonderful legislation that makes cricket (involving the national team) only accessible to FTA broadcasters means only one buyer. And Cricket Australia will lose out. Good for the consumer? Doubtful. Nine can lowball on offer on its own terms (delayed? highlights? fewer cameras and toys like RTS?) to the possible detriment of the viewer. Great huh?

So who decides what sport is nationally significant? You? The public on some straw poll? The pollies? MCH or ComCom. Ministry for Sport and Recreation? All Blacks would get the nod but not Super18. Should the Warriors be classed as nationally significant? Or the Breakers? They are NZ teams in Trans Tasman competitions. One would think not nationally significant. How about Hockey or Bowls? I'm seriously doubting that a FTA broadcaster, which either rarely or never broadcast these sports, would step up and show them if they were classed as nationally significant. Ergo the public loses out vis a vis the current situation. Thankfully the draft bill was defeated - it would overturn years of analysis by Ministerial Departments in favour of what a politician thinks is a good idea.

And surprise, surprise - the media reforms in Australia remove a swag of sports events from the anti-siphoning list. That further waters down the list from the last reforms 10 years ago. Seems there were a lot that werent "nationally significant".

Its possible they're just adding in margin so they can bundle it further later down the track - i.e. Voda broadband customers get it for half price. Not economic at $50 per month all up, much more doable at $100 per month, and a de facto way of getting around the merger restriction.
