As rugrat stated, it is very clear and painfully obvious what exactly was asked and answered, both in this thread and on ScreenScribe. Where did you get the idea from that you could just purchase the new box outright from Sky without being a subscriber eracode? Have Sky ever allowed you to do such a thing in the past with previous boxes? Can you provide a link to your source of that information?

"The next gen Sky box will run on Google's Android software, cost $199 upfront or $19 a month over a year - a change of tack for Sky, which has not previously charged directly for hardware."

This article is two years old, given the change of pace of technology, inflation, shortage of components and lack of information from Sky it is unlikely to still be valid..

I was asked where I got the idea that you might be able to buy the new Sky box outright.

You may be right - or wrong. Who knows?

That article is nearly 2 years old, and the Sky boss quoted left the company less than 3 months after that was published. Even so, it does not actually state that you can purchase the box outright. That pricing, if still applicable, would almost certainly be for Sky subscribers to upgrade to the new box. The new Sky box features Android TV, a Bluetooth remote control with voice control, 4K UHD support, Wi-Fi 6, 8 satellite tuners, and a 1TB hard drive. Do you really think that you can purchase outright a satellite TV recorder with those specifications for only $199?

It really is a dumb idea , who wants another box that will need to be thrown out on in a couple of years, an app would of met the majority of customers needs. The sky satellite is still needed for areas with poor internet though.

Sky take 3 years to roll a new box out. You won't be seeing any Sky sourced 4K content until 2025 at earliest. Kaon box has no 4K capability and mySky is 2008 technology so I can't see how they had much choice if they want to support satellite at least for another 15 years. Original DVB-S mpeg2 boxes served from 1998 to 2019 (roll out of Kaon started  in 2016).

Spark Max Fibre using Mikrotik CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, CRS125-24G-1S, Unifi UAP, U6-Pro, UAP-AC-M-Pro, Apple TV 4K (2022), Apple TV 4K (2017), iPad Air 1st gen, iPad Air 4th gen, iPhone 13, SkyNZ3151 (the white box). If it doesn't move then it's data cabled.

Anyone who has actually read the confirmation from Sky on ScreenScribe that I linked to earlier...

Eitsop: My Vodafone tv due to expire. And I have an Apple TV already, so I was hoping to get sky broadband and use my appletv to run a skytv app

Sky really should have just struck a deal with Vodafone to take over the VTV service in its entirety. They could taken over the whole back-end infrastructure and the boxes in homes. If they didn't want to continue to support people who just wanted FTA without a subscription they could have just bricked our devices OTA and offered us a refund like Vodafone did.

Sky’s mistake is trying to make money from the box. As previously mentioned they have delivered old tech and bad UI.
They should just focus on the content and release sky app for appletv and android

Yep just got that too. Was hoping I wasn't going to have to go to an old Sky box first then change again to the new one so happy to stick with VTV until the new one is hopefully ready.

Note that that article is fairly old (sept 2020)

Also that Quote is not strictly true. Sky Charged for hardware when it first released Mysky. $600 Upfrount to get a box that you never own, and has to be given back to sky if you cancel your subscription.

Yip - I paid the $600 upfront back in the day. Not sure how much I've saved 11 years later. In saying that, the thought of of having to pay a monthly fee for the hardware if I was to cancel and resubscribe has kept me subscribing at times when I may have cancelled otherwise.

Edit: missed a couple of key words needed to make my point...

I also paid upfront for MySky and again another one-off cost for upgrade to Sky +. I’m pretty sure paying upfront was worth it if you were a subscriber for just over 2 years, so it has worked for us for sure.

I also paid $600, and an install charge to upgrade to MySky +.

With free to air only on box, the monthly charge is $18.70.

I’d expect similar charge on new Sky box. Though as don’t have to return it if finish up, be interesting to see if can turn services on and off as suits. I.e have some $0 charge months when not using box at all.

I’m not waiting any longer for new box to come out, and returning MySky this month. Can use on demand services for anything normally would have recorded, and if want a movie with full works can rent on Apple TV.
