quickymart: What value does Sky offer for people like me who don't care about sport?

How can someone else answer this for you? Check out the channel offering and the episodes available and make a decision, it's simple really. No-one forces you to subscribe to Sky.

Tens of thousands, just like quickymart, are doing just what you suggest. And that is why Sky is dying the death of a thousand cuts. It's simple really.

Sky yes no? very easy  if it meets your needs and you are happy to pay,  go for it. If it does not meet your needs and you don't want to pay then fine don't subscribe.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

The future? Sky will reinvest in new technology and new sales channels. They are still earning annual profits exceeding $100 million, they have assets exceeding $1.9 Billion and equity $1.3Billion

You obviously have a chip on your shoulder about Sky, but your claims aren't based on the reality. They have lost some customers, Sky no longer suits everyone, but they still have 700,000 Subscribers. It clearly isn't for you, may I suggest you move on?

They could operate Basic, Sport, Neon as stand alone services, needing to each pay their way. Should Basic or Neon not cut the mustard, they stop, and Sky becomes a sports service only

I can't see that working well either. I am not sure how many of it's subscribers are Sports only fans and have it for only that reason, but they would be killing a large percentage of paying customers, and be entirely at the mercy of sports content providers for survival. Sports fans would face ever increasing large cost increases, and eventually would lose out there as well.

Thanks tdgeek. I last had Sky in 2015 and found I only watched about 6 channels - 2 of which were the kids ones. I just wanted to see if anything had changed with Sky since then.

To aid concluding this thread, Sky cant wake up, as the costs they incur cannot really be reduced by any significant factor. Most of it is sports, so even if they tinkered with pricing, they will still need the same revenue. If some wish to leave as they would rather forego Sky content and watch something different to save money that's fine.

But if you don't want Sky, don't have Sky, I dont get the beef you have. Its a fully relevant business that suits many people. There is no solution to cut pricing by 50%, so that being the case, its really a pointless discussion

Right, but the thread is titled that Sky claims it's woes are due to Piracy. There is a strong consensus that isn't the case.

I have seen nothing from you except "die die die" which isn't constructive. You (as best I can tell) haven't come up with a solution to the issue given the cost structures that aren't likely to go down any time soon, and you have said you aren't happy paying what Sky charges. Not really sure what you expect ?

BTW contributing in my mind is adding something of value (or adding something at all), "die die die" doesn't fit into that category for me, does it for you? Seems more like a troll.

Given that Sport is a key product set for Sky I wonder how much non legit means of viewing it is hurting their bottom line. There may well be something in what Mr Fellet is saying.

I was thinking about this myself. I am not sure though that he meant Sport. I am not aware of any decent way to watch an AB's or SR game live with a decent quality stream.

Maybe that doesn't matter as much to some people. I do wonder however, how big a deal piracy of the series on their channel SOHO is. I do wonder how people watch GOT for example if not for Sky, is it on FTA?

In this thread, as in all others, everyone has a right to express an opinion as long as it isn't defamatory to someone else. I think wishing for Sky to die is a valid opinion. No-one has to agree with it.

Apart from that, I think the discussion here overlooks an important point, which is that comments about Sky's future or lack of it all seem to assume that the environment Sky is operating in will essentially remain the same. I don't think that will be the case. With streaming TV there will be more and more niche competitors and more and more consumer pressure for some kind of global distribution. Getting rid of geo-blocking will be a long and difficult battle, but I believe the trend is in that direction. Eventually Sky, or whatever it morphs into, will be unable to compete globally and will necessarily become a niche NZ distributor, providing content with an NZ-only focus that has no market outside this country. Everything else will be taken over by larger international corporations that have the economies of scale to pay big bucks for premium content.

Not on FTA, but it is on Neon (in 720P I think).

Streaming wont make much of a dent in pricing, my rough calc was $8 a month. If the sports rights owners go global, do it themselves, thats the end of all sport pay tv, and that's fine. But the public will still be expected to pay the same rights fees, therein lies the problem. Skys model isn't flawed nor is the tech they use, both could be changed or updated but that wont reduce pricing by much.
