But I hope coverage here will be improved soon through the implementation of ESPN 2, 3 and TNT! These are the channels we need on SKY as they host most if not ALL of the NBA/NFL Games. :(

You do know you can already get espn 3 through isky?

We buy HD this HD that and only a very small percentage of what we watch is in HD
As far as content on sky is concerned just have a look at what Foxtel offers across the ditch and how much of it is in HD.
Their One channel on freeview shows American sports as well as others

The video content market (TV and movies) is governed in general by a series of "windows" to market. (this is a general statement about mostly the US market - the UK and/or others may well vary).

So, a new TV show gets sold first to a pay TV provider, then to a free to air provider, then internationally, then to airlines, then to on air repeats, then to the DVD market and so on. They sell the same show several times over and the income from that goes on to support other new series being developed.

One of these windows is the S-VOD (subscriber video on demand) which in essence gives us Netflix. The show (or whole series) is sold on the basis that it will be shown online to someone who subscribes to a service, not a channel, and who can watch it at any time.

For us viewers it's the motherlode. For the networks it's the death knell and for content makers it's absolutely the long term future but in the short term clashes with their existing business model (which requires them to sell rights to cable TV/pay TV outfits at a premium).

HBO for example, would love to sell content directly to the likes of you and me. It already has a model that is outside the norm (its channel in the US has no advertising. No advertising means no advertisers. No advertisers means nobody can be offended when you have swearing, nudity, challenging story lines or violence and so we get TV content that grown ups actually want to watch) and the next logical step would be to sell directly to folk like us, BUT they've been told in no uncertain terms that the moment they offer such a service all the pay TV operators will drop them like a hot turd from their line-up. (this includes HBO's parent company)

As has been pointed out, New Zealand is a rather small market a long way from the US and we bring in rounding error/petty cash levels of income so we're not likely to get a legal service from a big US provider any time soon.

However we are prime territory for testing such a service as HBO Go - little existing market to cannibalise, limited competition, English speaking customer base that is chomping at the bit for content.

BTW, Sky TV tells me it doesn't have exclusive rights for any of the S-VOD content we want to see and any other provider could come in and set up shop. I'd like to see TVNZ et al get into that market in the next two years so as to avoid becoming utterly irrelevant in the years ahead.

SKY can get channels; Shopping Channel, U, e.t.c. e.t.c

U is a FTA channel, so costs them nothing.
The shopping channel makes them money,
I don't see how these relate to getting another American sports channel which would really be for a niche market (I like watching the NBA, but I wouldn't go out of my way to remember it was on) and I'm sure a lot of subscribers are the same.

For the american sports fan ESPN (Aust) has be over run but soccer and rugby
there are days when it is back to back and replays and the Baseball or basketball takes a back seat
That is my gripe

In regard to the NBA. If you want it that badly, pony up for League Pass. I personally wouldn't give a toss if ESPN got rid of all basketball, as it doesn't interest me. Much the same as if I wanted to watch all baseball, I would need MLB.TV I would rather have them play more baseball. ESPN have to fit in programming to fit for ALL their audience, and what they actually can acquire. With American sports leagues being distributed across a few different networks, it just wouldn't work anyway.

Also, Sky have pretty much zero control over what ESPN show, they just re-broadcast the channel. Much like Discovery Channel, National Geographic etc.

I would say this is a partial truth.

Whilst Sky might not have the SVOD rights for HBO content (they probabvly don't since why bother buying those rights if you aren;t going to use them), the fact they have a deal with HBO to provide other rights makes it extremely likely HBO either cannot (legally because of the contract with Sky forbidding them) or will not (because of rocking the boat with Sky on the existing nice little revenue stream they have) negotiate with anybody else to sell the SVOD rights.
So they don't have the rights, but they are also the only ones who can get them (until such time as the contratc they have concludes presumably)

BTW, HBO have launched a standalone SVOD service in the nordic countries. It's called HBO Nordic. (original name!)
But the content is NOT the latest stuff, it is more of a back catalogue type of stuff (old sopranos episodes, etc) and the reviews I have read suggest it isn't very good.

Yet why wasn't the Celtics or Lakers game on (Playoffs)? Still not impressive for the price we pay for SKY.

And people wonder why PIRACY is on the rise.

Fix Piracy:

- Same Day/Few days after release.
- Available on Multiple Platforms.
- Better priced so that one place doesn't get it SUPER cheap whilst countries like New Zealand get entirely ripped off.

PERSONALLY. I don't see why they don't play the games here, they could even setup an NBA Channel to show all games and have people pay a fee of $10 or less, to our SKY BOXES. I don't want to pay $20 to get an NBA Pass and watch it on my Computer. Why do that when I can just "illegally" stream it. I'd rather watch it on my Television from my SKY BOX. That's money they are losing on if they don't start a subscription with SKY..

Another example of New Zealanders getting ripped off. For the people saying SKY is a Business and their prices are justified. I guess you were all fine with Telecom's Monopoly? Now look at them, the Telecommunications Market is WAY better. Now for the Free/Paid TV Market to get more open and better.

I and everyone I know who has SKY has no interest in NBA, I also asked around work and the content most people want is another HD movie channel, more International Cricket (England and South Africa) and a SyFy channel, out of about 25 males (I will not tell you what the ladies wanted) not one asked for more NBA. SKY have to cater for a wide range of tastes and yes I would like more but we are a small market and get serviced very well for sport.

I aim to misbehave.
