I just can't see the point of this when I can get Netflix for the same price, with a load more content, and play it from my Apple TV directly.

Quite a bit of content on Lightbox that is not on Netflix (Homeland, Black sails, Southpark, Vikings, Outlander to name just a few).

So the solution is to get both.
Still much cheaper than just Sky basic.

Surely as a service available on iPad and Windows 8 devices LightBox should be usable over WiFi?

As far as I can tell, my W8 device (Surface Pro 2) doesn't even have an Ethernet port?

I'm going to try over the weekend and see how I get on.

freitasm: As above, make sure you are using your ISP' DNS, no VPN. And make sure you test it over Ethernet, not WiFi.

that's fine. But for your average family in NZ setting up netflix is a pain in the ass, whereas this just works.

I'm impressed - I'm on Fibre - but the connection is upstairs in my study (last year it didn't seem likely that streaming online content was coming any time soon!). Connected my ultrabook (win 8) running the latest wifi protocol plugged it into the flatscreen telly using an hdmi cable I discovered lying around - and it works without a stutter - very, very impressed with however they are doing the streaming.

I found it totally fine on my trial.

Actually they are no longer in beta and are taking peoples money for a fully working service. If they wanted a "break" then they should have extended the beta or delayed billing people.

If Sky was having the same issues, people would be rioting.

Well, if by taking peoples money you mean offering a free 30 day trial, then yes, we are.

Would people really riot if one guy was having streaming issues with Sky? Since it most likely caused by local factors, e.g. network, connection or device, that would be a little unfair to Sky, TBH.

No, you have misunderstood. I am not talking about the issue but rather the comment of give them a break and time to resolve the issues. I understand it's more likely it's the end users issues, but this wasn't the context of the comment.

Also regardless of a trial or not, it's now a released commercial offering, people should have the expectations of a largely trouble free service, which on the evidence most people are given.

I wasn't being critical of your service, but of the comment by MM.

No worries, I was just being a little cheeky here.

I do agree that consumers should expect proper service and quality - even during a free trial (but a free trial is a great way to allow customer to make up their own minds about the quality of your service).

Good clarification Networkn.

The trial showed issues, which performance wise related to Silverlight at Lightboxes end. Resolved. And issues with the iPad app, which seem to be largely resolved with what I can see from the update. And great comments today also. While I may be a little biased, I feel the beta trial did what it meant to, and now seems pretty ready for prime time.

Just reporting back on problems I had early this morning. I am pretty sure the choppy video/sound was related to one box I had here so I spent the morning fixing that. Seem to have a pretty good picture and sound now and have tried it on laptop and a couple of boxes I had here. It appears that the WIndows 7 box had only 2Gb ram and it did not like that. All other boxes working fine.
I do note that I now have 4 devices listed as registered but I only want one box in the end so I need to delete the other three registrations. It says that you can only delete one box every 30 days which is a pain. How do I work out which entry is which. Pity it doesn't grab you PC name and use that.
Will test it some more but looking good for now

I have just tried lightbox and its pretty aweful on the desktop PC. Picture is juddery. Sound seems fine. Its like instead of doing a 3:2 pulldown on the content to get it to 60FPS it is picking random numbers between 1 and 10 for how long to show each frame for.

I will take the PC out to the machine with the HDMI capture card in it over the weekend to capture the resulting playback to see how many times each frame is showing for, but whatever it is, on the desktop monitor is is horrid, and I hate to see what motionplus on the TV will make of it.

Just as a point of reference, 30 and 60 fps playback fullscreen from youtube is faultless on the same PC.

I think its important to support a local competitor in this space. While not at the NetFlix/Hulu level of content, I personally find the price to be reasonable (after all its comparable to what we're paying for NetFlix + DNS), and was pleasantly surprised at the depth of content they do have. With all the noise that has been made recently about ISP global modes, it would not surprise me to see it becoming increasingly difficult to parallel import SVOD services as many of us currently do.

I personally consider LightBox good enough to enable us to give up our hideously overpriced Sky subscription, and yet still have a TV service comprehensive enough to cater to our needs (and we watch a lot of TV). We'll be signing up for the trial and seriously considering subscribing afterwards, in addition to our existing NetFlix & Hulu subscriptions.
