Standby makes no difference to recordings unless there is a clash between scheduled programs. When in Standby mode, the video and audio outputs to your TV and/or VCR are switched off as well as freeing up one tuner.

So, in summary, it's never a bad idea to leave MySky in Standby when you are not watching it. If there is a recording clash, it means that one more tuner is available.

At least, that is the case with the original MySky which we have. Not sure if the extra tuner is ever available for recording in MySky HDi? If it's not being used for viewing, then it would seem to be a sensible idea to use it for recording, but who knows whether MySky HDi is smart enough to do that?

After reading your comments about MySky HDi still being prone to freezes, I'm very glad we haven't upgraded yet. Maybe much later when they get it sorted and I haven't heard of any problems for at least 12 months? WAF at our house for MySky HDi in its present form would be abysmal...

Sweet, I will put it in standby each night before I go to bed then. See how it goes.

We had another hiccup last night though. We used live pause to watch lost, as we had a few things to do before we watched it. Well we fast-forward during the adds but somehow - don't know how it happened, it skipped 15mins of the programme and almost caught up to real time - which was odd...So I had to rewind it back to where it skipped.

As anyone had that happen?

And we had another weried incident the other week, which has never happened before. We were watching bones, again on live pause, but we started watching it 15 mins - so we did eventually catch up to live tv. But when we finished the show and changed to 008 to Watch Time Team, live, about 3 mins after changing channels it would freeze...but, I was albe to still change channels, so I swtiched to tv2 and then back to 8...but two minutes later the picture froze again. In the end I had to reset the whole box.

Maybe I have a gremlin..lol.

I am trying to watch everything I have recorded before I get the skyman to come around and look at it. But will also try the stand by mode for testing purpose and to prove that I have tried everything logical to make it work.

Yep I think it is crashing more lately (it seemed to get better for a long time). 99% is when I'm fast forwarding or going back to Planner while recording. Yes I get the skip foward thing too. It also does it (by design) when holding down the fast foward button.

I still wouldn't be with out it though, but Sky need to sort this all out ASAP.

i remember when i used to have mysky it had to be restarted every couple of days (like windows 98 - every day at least) ...

there are 2 buttons to press and it will reboot.

for me it used to solve all problems and used to remain good for 48hrs - 2 weeks. then needs reboot again.

I have discovered that if you record one program after the other on the same channel it actually uses two of the tuners as overlap occurs. So if you are also recording another channel, at the same time, the system will freeze up.

I think you are wrong there. Only 2 tuners can be used to record at once and I record both TV One and TV3 News and then Close Up/Campbell Live every night and it works fine and overlaps fine. It's still only receiving the channel once each, it just records it into 2 streams for the overlap period. What you are suggesting is 4 tuners can be used at once which is not possible as 1 is for V.O.D.

Mine trys to use all tuners. I have had it recording 3 shows(3 highlighted red in planner) at a time in the past, and I wondered myself how it was possible, as I was also watching live TV - that equals 4 tuners in use. But the box did it - and has handled it or failed.

Which is why I have set my start and end time to 0. Would rather miss the beggining or end of a show than have it fail - because the box get's confused and have nothing to watch at all.

I have also been putting myskyhd into standby before going to bed. And it continues to record if it is already recording.

We have had less crashes/freezes doing this. As it is freeing up the live tuner.

If it records 3 channels at once you will probably find that 2 of them were the same channel, ie: only 2 tuners for recording at max, and 3rd Tuner for watching another channel, 4th for Videos on Demand. This is what the documentation says and in my experience it is always the case.

Well the box shouldn't crash if it is doing what it is supposed to do - what it is programmed to do - yet it does.

If it is indeed using the same tuner to record the show afterwards - on both channels (most time we are recording two shows on each channel in primetime slot 8:30-10:30pm) - the box shouldn't fail or say there is a clash - yet it does. Which is why I assumed that for each recorded show (where it says recording) it was using 1 tuner.

The only way I know to stop mine from crashing now is to put it in standby to relieve the live tuner.

I totally agree, it shouldn't freeze at all, and I agree with your earlier comments that it has def got worse lately. I guess what I've picked up from all of this is the less strain you put on it, the less likely it is to crash (ie: reduce the overlap, have it on standby so it isn't decoding a live channel, not watching recorded shows if possible when it is recording). Kind of defeats the whole purpose of it though. I agree with all, I'm getting quite sick of it lately.

Mines never crashed. I have live rewind turned off, put it in standby when not using, and rarely use live pause. If phone rings or have to suddenly go out, I just hit the record button twice so that it records rest of program.

Just some ideas, either there's some dodgy boxes or above makes difference.

Our MySky 1 which we have had for two and a half years ( and now used in multiroom ) and MySky HDi we have had since August have never been turned off / in standby since we got them, both have PS3's sitting on top of them as well, and we have never had a lock up, freeze or failed recording and ours gets thrashed with multiple simultaneous recordings ( hate ads ) Very happy here with Skys' product, just sounds like a few faulty units floating around.

Last night I was recording Ghost Whisper on tv 2 and Numbers on tv3 while watching Sky8 time Team - on live pause - as we had to have toilet break after bones on tv3.

But it only recorded half n hour of numbers as it said there was a clash. There was no clash.

I guess my myskyhdi has no idea what it is doing.

I am going to try and watch all my recordings this week and then get my 3rd replacement box. I have had enough.

We have also now had plenty of freezes. Sometimes the decoder stops responding I actually have to unplug it from the wall in order for it to reboot.

I find it very strange to hear some people saying they have never had any issues, the problems i see listed here in this forum are all pretty simular to mine. Most people I speak to also suffer from these same problems. In fact my neighbour and I were talking about these freezes just the other day.

I think to get these problems fixed, we need to simulate a freeze, provide step by step instructions to sky on how to simulate the problem, that way sky can see the issues for themselves. I don't think the problems are just random, it always happens when there is a recording and/or live pause involved. I am pretty sure that if we had some sort of step by step test to freeze, all decoders will share the same result.

Thats a pretty good idea.

I have had failed recordings the last 3 Mondays of Nip/Tuck - it says clash on two of them and then failed on another - this has annoyed me greatly.

So tonight I will be recording

Knight Rider C4 7:30pm
Desperate Housewives TV2 8:30Pm
CSI TV3 8:30PM
Brothers and Sisters TV2 9:30Pm
Life on Mars tv3 9:30pm
Nip/Tuck Tv2 10:30pm

I watch TV2's Mitre Ten Dream Home at 7:30pm which is normally paused at the beginning as that is when I put the kids to bed - and have normally caught up to live tv by second set of ads.

We normally start watching CSI about 15 minutes after start of recording. As MyskyHDI states you can record two channels while watching a third or a recorded programme.

And as you can see there is no clash - I am not recording any other channels.

My box is set to add 0 to beginning and end. And just for these testing purposes I will not put my box in standby before going to bed.

Normally I find out tuesday morning that the box is frozen as the kids can't watch Cartoon Network and I have to push the reset button.

I am already having to download Nip/Tuck - so I do not mind sacrificing it's recording tonight. And have given up on the American version of Life on Mars due to that failing also. But have decided I don't want to taint the English version which I enjoyed so much.

Aslo my box at start of recording tonight has 49% space free.

sounds exactly like my experience ,i have had mysky hd since september and i have never turned it off yet (the blue light is always on) or reset it, it has never failed in recording any program or froze on any channel, the only thing that annoys me is that remote, i find the buttons to close together for my large fingers and having to push 3 numbers to change channels

Common sense is not as common as you think.
