We just set our myskyHD box to record the football on Sky at 6am this morning.

Woke up to watch it and low and behold it failed!  There was no other conflicts and the device didn't freeze - as the kids were watching cartoons when we woke.

The error code was 40 - what-ever that means.

I am just sick and tired of all the problems with this device.  It does not do what it is supposed to do.  The screen freezes and continuously having to reset the system and losing so many recordings is doing my head in.

As you can see from my reply to a post here http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?ForumId=106&TopicId=30525.

I have decided that I will make my own medica center pc/pvr.  A friend that made his own has no problems with his setup.  So now it is time to start saving up so I can build it.

Sky has completely let us down and mislead us.

I can't remember what the error code is but when your box was replaced the tech needed to get your card associated with it. IIRC if he didn't do it you will have trouble recording....

Yes, they did that 3 days later.  And I spoke to sky.  This was a month after orginal install last September.  So the box has been running as it should, execept for it's programming and logic flaws.

These problems of late have been "more" frequent since the firmware upgrade in my opinion.  Instead of less frequent since getting the replacement,

Trouble is they are just like a computer - they crash every so often.

Are you really sure you will have fewer problems with a pc based solution - not from what I read here.

At least today you only have person to complain to - building your own pc based solution means that will no longer be possible.

Oh I understand that completely.  It is an option to take in the future.  It works well for my friend, but he is more computer technical minded..lol

I will contact sky to discuss the problems once again with them.  It could be that the firmware upgrade is corrupted or something in my settop box.

The only problem is - i've got 80% of recordings on my box I will either need to watch or forfeit if I am to get another replacement box - so I am not looking forward to that hassle for a thrid time.

In the meantime I am double recording my fav shows with my dvd recorder in case the box fails - bit of a hassle, but what else is a tv addict to do..lol

Hehehe. Thats why I have my old Mysky box as a multiroom unit. Anything I really want to see I record on both boxes. Sad really that the HDi boxes are so unreliable. I recently went overseas for a week and came home to find the HDi box had locked up during the week. PITA though to have to watch stuff in the bedroom but at least I got it.

Yeah the freezes/lockups are really bad.  Sky really needs to priortise getting that glitch fixed ASAP.

i found that if you put the box on standby when your not using it helps alot with the freezing, and it also still records your shows

Mines gone perfectly even after firmware update, so it's not firmware. I've got about 10 programs series linked at moment.

I also try to delete stuff, watch stuff in order recorded to stop disk fragmentation, as when installed I heard installer say to trainee one, sometimes have to format disk as can cause problems if it gets to fragmented.

Figure less painful to try keep everything in order myself.

I was wondering about trying this, just did not have the guts to see if it actually worked.

So you saying programs will all still be recorded when the box is put on standby? I have found that the box runs hot when left on, don't really like leaving it on.

I put mine instandby whenever its not use - seems to fail more often when you are using it, than not.
My freeze issue seems to happen whenever I am recording two different channels while watching another, and also asking it to record another directly after one of the original recordings has finished. When the time comes to switch to the new recording, it freezes precisely at that time (doesn't happen every time - just when I try to switch viewing channels amongst all that).

With a 10 min extension set by default and effectively using all 3 tuners at once it seems to get confused. I think I would too.

I am getting tired of the freezes.

It froze on monday, failed to record Nip/tuck.  Said there was a clash.  But there was only one programme set to record between 10:30pm and 11:30Pm.

However it probably had a spaz because the 9:30pm -10:30pm slot it was recording TV2 and TV3.  So becxuae of the fail clash freeze, it decided to fail those two recordings.  Of which I now have to download.

I previously had the recording set to Auto.  I was told months back to not set the extensions as it will fail.

So it seems auto likes to fail occasionay also.  So now I am going to trial using 0 at the start and finish.  So I am hoping it will start on the dot and end on the dot and won't try to find non-existant tuners to try and record the next shows in line.

I will also try and put it in standby to cool it down, although somewhere on these forums someone said that standby does not do much anyways.

But I am a goer, so I will try and do it.  Although, can I put it in standby if it is already recording?

Standby makes no difference to recordings unless there is a clash between scheduled programs.  When in Standby mode, the video and audio outputs to your TV and/or VCR are switched off as well as freeing up one tuner.

So, in summary, it's never a bad idea to leave MySky in Standby when you are not watching it.  If there is a recording clash, it means that one more tuner is available.

At least, that is the case with the original MySky which we have.  Not sure if the extra tuner is ever available for recording in MySky HDi?  If it's not being used for viewing, then it would seem to be a sensible idea to use it for recording, but who knows whether MySky HDi is smart enough to do that?

After reading your comments about MySky HDi still being prone to freezes, I'm very glad we haven't upgraded yet.  Maybe much later when they get it sorted and I haven't heard of any problems for at least 12 months?  WAF at our house for MySky HDi in its present form would be abysmal...
