freitasm: Surely you understand their cost are not only wages and petrol? Telecom for example has new networks to deploy, cabinets to install, fiber to roll out, maintenance of existing equipment, software updates to their existing hardware, increased working hours due to XT problems, etc.

You are also correct, in that I am taking a very simplistic view..

All of us "workers" are being told that we have to do "more for less"

So I don't particularly care about poor old Telecoms problems..got enough of my own

As for all the above benefits mentioned above..most of us will see not benefit from any of these.

Still the world would be a sad place, if we all thought the same

What annual wage increase?? The only people who get these are Gov workers.. The rest of us do without..

You know how I mentioned I don't get wage increases? I am a government worker. Across the board salary freeze. Only the blasted unionites get one. And even then only the ones with a collective agreement (which excludes IT).

... Vote with your wallet if is causing financial hardship. The % rise is even miles below the annual inflation rate that is associated with the CPI.

You may not see any benefit from the capex but the majority of New Zealanders who receive their broadband via copper will once the FTTN rollout is complete. Anybody who's a Telecom landline customer will also see the benefit of the NGN voice replacement.

So what is the option? Pay another ISPs or telco? The way you are saying New Zealanders shouldn't have access to Internet then.

I think it's a lot more important access to Internet than to Sky TV.

I'd find that statement pretty hard to believe.

The majority of New Zealanders probably venomently object to paying Telecom more money but I certainly wouldn't believe the majority of the population can't afford.

A large majority of New Zealanders also love bleating about poor broadband performance. The simple reality is that the cost of upgrading telecommunications network and deploying new technology isn't cheap.

For the last 18 months, the exchange, that I am connected to will not provide full ADSL 2+ and is so old that, that I cannot even toggle a toll-bar. In fact to do this I need to pay perhaps $35 dollars to turn on and off.

As for speed. Telecom refuses to adequatly explain it packet shaping policy

Keeping in mind that the way this policy is implemented is manifestly different from that stated in its marketing literature.

One thing that you may not be aware of:

Telecom is just a cashcow for its shareholders and any CAPEX, is well overdue and should be aborbed as one of the costs of "doing business"

I am sure that you and Telecom earnestly believe that I am being "Unreasonable" in this opinion, Yet I still maintain that the majority of New Zealanders agree with me

Good work!

The more people that realise that paying huge prices for TELEVISION is a stupid thing to do the better, especially when you have limited choice in what you pay for. A pick'n'mix option would be much better than the monopolistic "this is what you can have" attitude - an attitude which displays a blatant arrogance towards (and disregard for) the customer.

Turning the box off and finding something better to do is much more rewarding...

You are talking Big Time? If so, change plans. They have other plans. Or change ISPs. Telecom is not the only one. I haven't been a Telecom customer (fixed line and broadband) for about eleven years now.

Telecom WAS a cash cow for it's shareholders. It's obviously been a while since you looked at their current financial situation!

Your example of being in an area with poor broadband and a clunky old NEAX switch is exactly what Telecom are addressing, hence the huge spend on replacing their broadband and voice infrastructure.

I don't think the traffis chaping issue also has much to do with Telecom's expenditure - Telecom only sell a single plan that uses traffic shaping, there are plenty of others that don't.

Anyway this is getting OT - Sky are a far better example of a cash cow than Telecom could ever be. Buying programming and reselling it certainly doesn't involve spending $1 billion per year end of end to upgrade infrastructure! Their advertising costs are almost the same per year as their programming costs!

I think it's a lot more important access to Internet than to Sky TV.

That's a weird thing to say. Based on what? I can tell you a lot of people don't value the internet as highly as the geeks and would choose Sky TV over internet/email. Granted, it's your opinion though and that's fair enough.
