Anyway, bring on some more competition!

I've noticed that as well, and it's quite sad. Although I'm happy with Sky and can afford it at the moment, that would be the first luxury to go if I had problems putting food on the table

if you dont want sports, then you can go without sky.

90% of its customers are probably only getting it because of sports.

and that makes me so happy i dont like watching sports :)

I've been tossing up weather to get sky or not, mainly for the Formula 1 and a bit of international rugby. I've since discovered justin.tv and myp2p.edu, both stream perfectly reasonable pictures of F1, rugby and thousands of other live programs you'd ever want. I've watched a couple of F1 races and while its not quite as good as Sky's coverage it's enough to stop me spending $800-$1000 a year, this way I can now afford a PS3 and stream the feeds through the playstation straight to the TV. If sky would let you just pick the channels you wanted on a pay per channel basis eg $20 a month for the sports channel+ the FTA channels and not the rest of the rubbish I would jump right in.

I don't watch sports either, and I did have it through our TC package, but dumped it...went with new tv with built-in freeview, it's all my family needs.

To each his own but would rather spend that money on something else.
So many apartments now (around Welly at least) I guess that may have something to do with so many subscribers...less space to do things outside makes TV an attractive alternative.

I watch too much sport to give up Sky.

As an aside, especially for sports, the multi operator market is a double edged sword.

In many larger markets, this model has failed. In Germany Premier got outbid by Arena for Bundesliga rights, two years later it was back with Premiere again. Same thing happened in the UK with ITV and Setanta. You also end up with the issues of having to subscribe to all the providers just to get what you want.

for a 3am game i sleep and catch the FTA re-run the next day.....

For other test matches in prime time i'll go to a pub.
As for the rest of the S14 and Air NZ Cup - i barely have time to watch the games at eden park, let alone watch the rest on TV :)

We had sky for many years. Mainly for rugby. In order to get 'wide-screen' rugby early on you had to get the rugby channel. To get this you needed all the other sports channels and the base package. All extra costs for stuff you didn't watch. We had movies at various times but the movies you wanted were never on the nights/times you wanted to watch them.

When they came out with HD... they wanted to not only make you buy the MySKYHD... but the infamous $10 HD ticket. What the heck was that??

Once Freeview HD came out I decided to build an HTPC... the picture was better, there were plenty of movies as long as you recorded them as they came through and then watched them at your convenience... and the kids didn't watch those 'awful' japanese cartoons on Cartoon Network that were just adverts for the toys!

Fortunately, about that time, the rugby world was still feeling a little blue post a certain 2007 event so I didn't even really miss the rugby. Like Regs I've taken the kids to a few games at Eden Park and just watched the games on Prime where I could.

It was getting towards $100 per month to just watch the rugby games in HD. I didn't want 95% of what they were offering so gave up the 5% instead. Really... I haven't even missed it much. Also... I have mates with Sky still so I scrounge off them when necessary! :-)

Get a life and get rid of Sky!

I just cancelled my sub, Enjoyed it while I had it but wasn't using it, even the sports. For me it wasn't worth paying the sub for the few times a month I watched a pay channel. Its good for about a year or two then everything starts repeating.
That and if you have it your gonna have to accept that the prices are going to go up about $1.50 a year.

HD ticket is a rort, as was making customers get Rugby channel to get widescreen. This tells me Sky is not willing to invest in new technology to deliver their products at the highest quality. HD contents are standard these days, same was widescreen format. It doesn't cost Sky more to get these.

I keep to my subscription to sports package only, and refused to pay for HD or any other Sky addons like mulitroom (another rort). MyskyHDi is free thanks to the Vodafone offer. 8)

Sky is not worth having anymore? Maybe the thread should be retitled to "Who hates Sky?

Its a Pay TV service, but the common theme is that most dont like paying for thr content. For some, who like the content it is a good option, for those who dont have need to see their content, off course its not worth it.

Sky has competition, and its free. So for those who hate Sky, just admit that it doesnt meet your needs. When somehing doesnt meet my needs , I dont hate it, I just don't get it.

For me the initial reason for getting Sky was back in 2006 when TVNZ lost the rights to show F1 live. My reasoning was the $60 per month (back then) to watch an F1 race every couple of weeks was cheaper than going to each one! Not that I'd have actually been able to do that though, of course!

Although it's by no means cheap, and there's an awful lot that we don't watch on it (most programmes we watch are on FTA), on the sport front the main things I watch are F1 and the Tour de France, but not much else. The kids channels are good for, er, the kids, and the odd thing on the Discovery / CI / National Geographic documentary channels also get viewed. We don't have the movie package at all.

It's a shame that they don't do more tailored packages to suit individuals needs though. They find it very straight-forward to offer us a month free of the Rialto channel every now and again (which we've never watched yet), so it wouldn't be too hard I'm sure.

I can't justify upgrading to MySky HDi though - an extra $15 a month for the PVR functionality essentially, plus a further $10 for the HD ticket, is too much in my view. Not that I'd pay the HD ticket anyway, since F1 and cycling aren't in HD, and we don't have the movie package. With most other HD programmes we watch being on FTA, I'd rather get a MyFreeview|HD box - once they permit transfer of recordings off it anyway (hopefully in the pipeline????).

I quite like Sky and have had it continuously since 1996, although at the current pricing I am on the cusp of dumping it. I watch the occasional sports match (although, for some reason, much much less this year than in others), record the occasional interesting movie so on cold wet days (or when I am in bed with the winter 'flu) I have something to distract me, and I have a minor additction to the History Channel. For me, it's a far cheaper vice than something like smoking (which I don't do), I can comfortably afford it, and sometimes it's very handy. The main attraction for me is uninterrupted live rugby, and ad-free movies that don't require a run to the dvd store etc. I also like some of the material on Rialto.

I do have a few gripes tho. It's getting a bit expensive for the use I get from it, those damn MyskyHDi banners than spin on the bottom of the screen from time to time *during* supposedly uninterrupted movies are very very irritating, and the repeat rate on some of the channels is getting too high. Also, the DRM on HD content means it isn't worth me going to the HD box - the 160GB you get on their is miserable, and if I pay for the HD ticket I can't copy shows to disc in HD to watch on the laptop when travelling. I know you can transfer shows with a HDCP stripper and PC-based recorder, but that's too much hassle.

If the made HD part of the standard package, alowed a 1TB trive to be hooked to the MySky box, and allowed programming to be transferred onto a home network then I would probably upgrade. As it is, I will probably hang on to it until after the rugby World Cup, and if things haven't improved I suspect I will cancel.
