Two totally different markets. Sky cant operate a $15 SVOD to keep everyone happy, not unless everyone would like thousand of past sport games to binge on.

They dont operate in the binge TV and Movie market.

They can run satellite, or SVOD, but doing both is duplication, but either would do.

But, yep, moving on

When I had Sky, something i noticed was their premium programming did not repeat very often. If you weren't home at 8:30pm on Wednesday to watch X on SoHo, then you had to record it or stream it (if available). The only TV I'll organise my day around is live sport.

A lot of the stuff wasn't available for streaming so if you missed the start of premium series, there was no going back.

We eventually ditched sky but we have just picked up Neon for GOT and have started watching WestWorld which I missed first time around. Even though Neon is bit pricey compared to Netflix, I think we'll keep it for a while.

I have found the app to operate flawlessly via a Chromecast Ultra.

No, I think you have somewhat misread my post. I have a requirement for more than one TV series. For years I had Sports, Movies, Rialto, and SoHo. Heck, I had the movies package from 1996 to 2016. I have been gradually dropping packages as Sky increasingly annoyed me. The point of my post was that me and my significant other enjoy GoT (among other things), and decided to defer a decision on dumping Sky until GoT was over AND fibre was installed. At that point other services and options become more viable.

I don't expect them to cater for it. I do expect them not to actively prevent it when it worked fine for years - especially after phoning me back specifically to lie to me that they wouldn't/didn't after I explicitly asked the question when they called me to persuade me to get the new decoder. As much as I dislike aspects of their service, I really dislike being deliberately and flagrantly lied to by a vendor in order to get me to agree to something.

Yes, I can FFW. And I pretty much invariably do if I watch something on Freeview, which I can live with as I'm not paying for Freeview. But it does jarringly interrupt the programme flow. Which is acceptable for a free product, but not for something I am paying significant sums for.

As for Neon, if I move to fibre it's almost at the point where I would rather torrent the last GoT season than give Sky another cent.

Which of itself should worry them. Apart from the actual subscribers they have lost, sentiment seems to have turned. I remeber back in the 90s when I got Sky I was a bit of a fanboy, and most people who got it (esp the sports fans) were enthusiastically popular about the service after escaping the wasteland of free-to-air broadcasting. That's not now the case. Based on the admittedly small sample of my friends and after work drink conversations where I am, pretty much everyone (including sports fans) has a negative view of Sky. And a number, like me, ate looking at alternatives and actively considering dropping them. Much media commentary is the same. And, in my opinion, this change in sentiment and perception among remaining subscribers should concern them much more than the subscribers that they have already lost.

That was a good read. It will be interesting to see how Sky evolves and what it will morph into. They are clearing knitting their relationship with Vodafone tighter. It will be interesting to see how Spark, 2 degrees and the Vocus Group responds.

One thing might annoy a tad about the possible amazon rugby deal.

Sky pays tax here in NZ, a fairly substantial amount which pays for our infrastructure etc including the new fibre network. And NZ taxpayers in general have paid for the UFB network installation.

Now amazon will swoop in , using the taxpayer funded fibre network to deliver rugby to the people of New Zealand, and pay tax on profits in ireland.

In a perverse view of things, Sky have financially contributed to the fibre network build which makes it possible for amazon to put them out of business.

Just as a matter of interest does Sky own the OB gear for covering sports matches or is it contracted to another company. If Amazon got the Rugby then they would have find someone to cover these games.

That is one way to look at it. Although at least overseas services should now have to pay GST in NZ. Until the playfield with buying overseas products and services from NZ is sorted out, we are always going to have this problem.

Yes, Sky purchased OSB back in 2010.

Which could also mean that Fellet could up the price to cover production for Amazon if they did win the rights.
