lchiu7: This is not a beta access issue so I thought I would post here.

It seems most beta users are using PC's, IOS devices and Airplay(?) to access the service.

That's all fine but I would much prefer to watch on my big TV (I have no IOS devices and Airplay sounds like a bit fiddly).

What sort of dedicated media players would folks like to see implemented?

My preference would be

- PS3 (that could just be selfish since I use my PS3 for Netflix, Amazon, Vudu and Hulu)
- Some sort of TV app but that might be difficult since there are so many platforms around
- A locally available media player like a WD Live or Netgear NeotV?
- Google TV (but only as a last resort). I do have a Google TV device (Logitech Revue) and it does Netflix nicely on a big TV and the app is just from the Play Store.

All the above devices support IR remotes and universal remotes which I think is essential if the service wants to be in the living room rather than in the home office.

Must admit is if it wasn't for the sport (which only gets turned on during the All Blacks season) it is starting to look less and less likely I will continue with Sky ... but I would like to see...

+ 1 for WDTV
+ 1 for or Smart Blu Ray ot TV App (Samsung hopefully :))

and of course for all of us who don't go down the Apple path an Android App

The big BUT is all need to meet the wife usability factor (she who hands the remote to the 4 year old to get Netflix working)

My preference is definitely to see it on a TV (watching Vikings on the Beta version via PC (in the study) last night was just not the same and I ended up changing my geo location (UnblockUS) and watching further episodes on Netflix (Mexico) .. I might be getting hooked).

They have a zero rate between 1 & 7 (??? I think those are the right hours) over night and as an add on ($) all you can eat You Tube

Yeah i saw the youtube package, that is why i was wondering if attewell had it. I guess if they just watched it in the zero rated window that answers the question.

Silverlight has an option in it's settings for hardware acceleration, which will allow for the use of a GPU. I believe it also needs to be enabled in the player as well, so Lightbox would need to enable it also for it to be used. I am unsure if they do or not.

We'll double check this with the vendor who provided the Silverlight player implementation.

Lightbox - we are online TV.

I think that's far more than just your preference. For it to really have mass adoption in the marketplace, there needs to be an easy way for non-technical folks to get it onto their TVs. And this can't be ticked off by saying "We support 2014+ models of <Insert single TV manufacturer>".

Having it via an relatively easy to use and configure standalone device such as the Apple TV, Roku, or similar is the answer here. The device must be relatively inexpensive (< $200), and possibly even have some sort of subsidy (e.g. discounted if you sign to an n month contract, or have other Spark services).

My personal preference here (because we already have two of the little fellas) is the Apple TV. But as that is an "invite only" platform, I suspect it may not be the best choice for Lightbox.

i really dont want to have to buy another device to watch this, sure maybe as an option, but not as a requirement. if i need another remote, ill stick with netflix in my tv.

Oh, I totally grok that. But I'm thinking in terms of making it easy for mass adoption, having a low cost standalone device available and heavily promoted would be the way to go. Ideally this would be one of the current market leaders here in NZ, but if its more viable to bring in a new player, I'm not 100% against that.

We do currently have a solution that works with our existing config. Its just not as ideal as I'd like, as I'd prefer using a device directly connected to the TV rather than AirPlay. And others wanting to use this setup would require an iPad + Apple TV, so its potentially quite expensive if you don't already have all the required hardware.

Panasonic VT Plasma's (yes multiple :D) here. So TV app would perfect. Sony PS3 also would be fine.

wishlist item (not a bug), indicate on the website what episodes have been watched. so when the missing episodes get filled you can easily go back and watch what you have missed (im currently watching sarah silverman, havent seen it before, but a few episodes are missing which im skipping past)

... and hopefully Telecom can manage it as successfully as they did TiVo's introduction to NZ!

In all seriousness, I do think this should be an option, given it's the one way to ensure everyone can access the new service (not everyone has a tablet, Apple TV, Roku, Smart TV...). It's just that it'll need to be done properly - not something Telecom managed to do with TiVo.

One of these in a case with a logo on it price would come in ~ $100 I would think

The Pi is a possibility, especially if your TV supports CEC. But Telecom would have to build the entire platform, rather than the app or perhaps find a way to provide access via something like XBMC or RaspBMC. Of course won't the platform also require HDCP?

I wouldnt think this is likely, even netflix is pulling its public API.
Having said that though its not hard to open this sort of thing up, it just comes down to where would you want to channel your support and development resources.
It could also open up interesting conversations with the various studios...

problem with xbmc and silverlight, is well silverlight. if there was a public api and possible a way to use the video player and spit a url at it, then you could embed that player in an app, but mightnt work on linux (maybe with , wouldnt work on the pi.

all the netflix plugins ive seen for xbmc were very bad and had to launch an external browser to play it, which caused issues with remote, separate window etc.

also NZ devs arent that common for xbmc, there was a tvnz/3 on demand app for xbmc, but once that developer left the plugin basically died.

still think freeview channel is best solution.

Problem with Kodi (nee xbmc) is that it is still largely a solution for geeks, unless Lightbox have a ready to roll custom solution that requires virtually no input from the user (apart from entering network credentials, if applicable). This stuff needs to be plug and play, not plug, jailbreak, install, debug, configure, debug, swear, debug, and play.

And that relies on the DRM, authentication and streaming solutions be able to support that. As well as the studios accepting that as a valid method of accessing content...
