That really doesn't sound good, and it sounds like it just isn't a finished product.

Did you expect any more from sky? That would be foolish IMO. All the way back to the early satellite days when they pushed out a laggy software update the hardware of the time could barely run, and just basically said "that's how it is now" they have had no clue about putting anything remotely tested, working, and doing a good job out. Look at neon - same thing, half baked with promises of fixing it later.

With hardware never trust anything they say about future software updates in making the decision to what you buy now. Double the mistrust of promises when its involving sky.

I suspect that we will see the pod product quietly dropped after they cant make it work and people encouraged back over to satellite paying a sub for channels they don't want which is skys business model back to when they started.

I tried to watch The Shopping Channel (to see how bad the image quality was) and it said that the content was restricted, on entering my pin of 1234 I was told that it was incorrect, I gave up.

That'll teach you for encouraging the shopping channel to exist.

fair enough from TVNZ's pov. The streamed content has their "streamed advertising" built in to it (In the TVNZ app). I'm guessing Sky wanted to build "Sky Advertising" into the streamed content.

The streaming wars are on, I would like to see one platform for everything now there are several costing around $20 per month each!!

Reading this it would seem the new skypod will become an igloo/TiVo failure with no EPG for some broadcasters.

I still can’t see why sky are still focused on an outdated business model with requires rented equipment just makes me think how out of touch they are!

Netflix, Disney and Prime with apps only are the better delivery method. They already do this with the sports channels. Why not move the entire platform to a single app?

A review: https://thespinoff.co.nz/business/09-03-2023/review-sky-tvs-new-sky-box-still-doesnt-seem-ready-for-release

TL;DR

After eight months of delays, Sky TV’s set-top box is finally making its way into homes. But maybe it should have been pushed back a little longer.
...
After two weeks with my Sky Box, it still doesn’t feel ready for release.
Yet the promise of Sky Box is a good one, so don’t put it back in its box just yet. The hardware seems to be in place, it’s just the software that needs to be sorted. In time that can, and probably will, happen.

Sky needs to release the boxes now before it's to late, then push firmware updates to them over time!!

I was using two Vodafone TV devices and had pre-ordered two Sky Pod devices. I'm going to call Sky today and cancel.

I was never feeling great about the move, and now with National Geographic going, and TVNZ channels not being integrated in with the other channels, it's just pushed me over the edge. I wasn't watching a whole lot of live tv any more, but those were two channels I'd watched fairly regularly. Most of our watching these days were on-demand services like Netflix, Disney+ etc.

I'm going to move our couple of LG TVs over to Freeview HD via antenna for live tv, and continue to use Netflix/Disney+/Neon, and save myself the $80 per month.

Never buy devices on the promise of an update. Once the money is in the bank the motivation to push an update diminishes greatly.

We have a VTV box on our main TV. Have not subscribed to Sky since we ditched satellite back in 2018. The only live linear TV that we watch is the nightly news and we normally have a breakfast / AM show on in the background while getting ready to go out to work. I'll be disappointed when the VTV box is finally killed off but for little live linear TV that we watch we will just switch to using the TVNZ+ & Three streaming apps on the ATV 4K. I have no interest in going back to satellite nor installing a terrestrial antenna on the roof.

The household wants a couple of Sky channels so we need a Skybox.

No interest in satellite dish at all so the only option is a SkyPod. Ability to record is not a biggie though nice.

I have a Mi box for apps but did not need it as VTV could provide them. Using only one remote is good.

If the Sky channels become not attractive then will ditch the Pod and the subscription.

Interesting how the "market" will not provide the best solution for me although willing to pay.

Keeping Vodafone cable for internet as very competitive price negotiated. (Have Chorus fibre installed as backup)
