Rugby is a short professional career and involves a lot of time away from family and giving bigs chunks of your life over to the pursuit of professional goals- fitness, nutrition etc. The job imposes more on your life than a conventional high performance role like CEO.

The competition for talent is fierce.

Totally agree, what others are not considering is the life time of sacrifice elite sports people put in to get to where they are, the endless trips away to play, train etc. with their parent taking them all over the country, at their expense.

I would say that these guys, and their families deserve the money they are getting. If I was the best IT consultant in the world I'd expect this kind of money!

The Sky bashing actually tires after a while.

Nobody is forcing people to pay for Sky. Like any discretionary spending people have a choice whether they want to pay the price that company X wants to charge for it.

What I find tiring is the endless comparisons to Netflix. If you wanted lots of older movies and lots of older TV shows you would not subscribe to Sky. If you wanted sport you would not subscribe to Netflix. Admittedly, Basic should be $20, but even so. Two different beast

Basic subsidises sport. Basic should be $20 to gain low ARPU users that they don't have now, and sport needs to be charged what it costs, circa $60. Even then, when you add in MySky fee, its still high, but I assume this new Voda box will be no rental, and that would make $20 Basic very appealing. If you want sport, you would still pay what you pay now, so that's no issue.

Is it rubbish to everyone? No. Rubbish is in the eyes of the beholder. I like the doco channels myself. And a couple others. Not into the food channel but many are. If I was a kid I'd be into the kids channels. $20 is a good buy, for me at least. However as I have sport, it makes no difference that Basic is about $48

I'd happily pay $20 for Basic. Or even $25 or $30 if it included a PVR. Then I'd also be happy to add another $60-70 a month on when I wanted to add sports (I like to watch the Rugby internationals).

I cannot justify $50 a month for Basic (without MySky) however, and once my current ($50 a month for Basic, Sports HD and MySky) deal ends, Sky gets cancelled (about February).

We are finally going Sky-free. Yay! Just another month. Those who get value from it should have it. Those who don't, shouldn't. I am happy with that.

It's a matter of relativity I think. How much does Sky-Basic offer over FTA Freeview? How many people are prepared to pay for the extra value, and how much.

Docos pitched at a multi-tasking 12 year old, peppered with advert breaks and endless repetition don't offer much value to me. I'm just not a fan of Deadliest Housewives - hence my use of the term rubbish.

I can always find something to watch on Netflix or Lightbox or Neon.

When I had Sky I would often struggle to find something good to watch. I would characterise it a lot of the time as Nothing for Anyone.

I'm still surprised anyone see value in Sky's Basic package for an adult audience. For little kids, sure. Our older kids don't really watch broadcast TV any more, they stream. All of them could have a TV in their room, none of them want them.

I don't think it is even just a Sky issue. All who are in any way involved in commercial television in this country should be shaking in their boots. Every young person I know is absorbed by either gaming or YouTube. I know several who have aerial or cable TV connections that they have never bothered to hook up. They just don't see the need. I think traditional linear broadcast TV is an old person's game, and when we all die out, there won't be anyone left to watch it.

I'm not that old (below 40) and I like linear programming, but that is mainly due to my lack of desire to watch normal TV and just browse till I find something that I want to see... I have so much going on at work etc. that remembering what programmes I like, where they can be found etc. is a chore.... If we had a single app for my android tv that could aggregate the different apps together including reminders and notifications when a new episode of a program is available then I might find on-demand content more palatable.

and who is meant to provide all the content that Netflix etc rely on .
