I would certainly expect 4k streams if Sky is wanting to leverage fibre for their new box.

Even if it's just a popup channel, or for Premier League - who in 2021 started 4k HDR streaming via Sky & BT Sport. BT Sports offering has 72 events a year in 4K HDR https://www.bt.com/sport/bt-sport-ultimate.

I'd pay extra for that.

I don't understand the argument that this cannot be done currently in NZ. The content exists already and NZ's BB infrastructure is more than enough to handle the expected load of these matches.

How many people do you think watch an AB's test match? IF theoretically, they were all watching in 4K, I think that would cause quite a load.

Wouldn't we have seen network congestion with all the 4K content available on the likes Netflix, Disney+, Amazon, etc?

Sky have no 4K capability, what is hard to understand. They had to make a deal to have the outside broadcast upgraded by 2025 so current likelihood of having 4K studio/playout equipment or 4K capable CDN is NIL.

OSB trucks needing to be upgraded is an entirely different issue than setting up a CDN for 4K streaming.

I'm talking about offering already-broadcast 4K content from overseas. I wouldn't think the effort from upgrading their existing CDNs to provide 4K capacity would be huge.

I wasn't meaning locally sourced content. Was meaning overseas content that coincidently has much lower viewership. EPL for example is broadcast overnight, and many people watch on-demand the next day.

No, for the reasons in my last post in this thread.

Sky drag the boat anchor and do things in stages, if OSB in 4K is likely to be a reality in 2025 then expect 4K capable studio, playout and CDN around the same time. Standard practice for any broadcaster to do studio/playout first or how do they ingress, inject advertising, and playout to CDN. IPTV content would be switched through internal infrastructure in same manner as satellite content.

But is sky ever going to provide a 4k content via satellite?

If I am streaming a sporting event that has finished and its broadcast overseas in 4k like for example F1, what's the difference from me streaming in 4k sport as opposed to the multiple 4k on demand movies and TV shows currently available on Netflix Amazon Apple TV?

How about sky offering a download service for offline viewing of 4k with their new boxes.

Once new sat is up, 2024, and they have the infrastructure Sky will do 4K over satellite.

Here is Sky's FAQ on 4k from 2021: https://help.sky.co.nz/s/article/4K-and-HD-Content

There's not a whole heap of content available in 4K around the globe right now. We'll be adding 4K capability when we manufacture our next box or device.

At this stage we're looking into different options for content delivery of 4K that'll best match the interests of our customers. It'd be awesome to be able to show all our content in HD.

Our satellite capacity is limited but as international delivery technologies improve we hope this will allow us to offer more of our channels in HD in the future.

To me that sounds like if we get 4K, it will be via their new box & via fibre. The question is timing I suppose

afe66: HD is 1080 isn't it? :=p

I always thought:

HD = 720 (vertical pixel count)  (Apparently aka "HD Ready")

FHD = 1080 (vertical pixel count)

4K UHD = 2160 (vertical pixel count)

:-P

Would Sky be likely to bring in some new channels given they won't be constrained by Satellite capacity? They will need to do something to encourage people over

Unlikely simply because they currently have a lot of spare capacity, enough to convert all current channels to HD if feed available. I did the calculations in 2019 so have forgotten details. They are actually planning to lease fewer transponders on new Sat compared to current and continue to use H.264 as Kaon boxes, let alone mySky,  don't support HEVC.
