smarsden: Can anyone tell me if Formula1 is HD? I was thinking of upgrading to MySkyHDi, specifically so I could watch the European races at a more sociable time. Also do you need the $10/month HD ticket to watch sport in HD, or is that only needed for the movie channels?

no it's not, but that's not Skys fault. Bernie still lives in the dark ages. We've been promised F1 in HD for nearly 2 years now (or there abouts), still come to nothing. I understand FOM already own equipment capable of broadcasting in HD.

As always, I'm happy to be corrected. I suppose I didn't look as far into the 1080p vs. 1080i thing as I should have.

All I was going off is what my installer told me (that the HD content is in 720p) and the fact that a full 1080p signal reqiures more bandwidth that what is currently being utilised by Sky. Now 1080i, well that would be a different story... which is obviously is.

I've been doing a bit of digging around on this topic and I think I actually may have been correct. The MySkyHDi set top box (STB), does have the ability to upscale. Page 58 in the manual highlights this.

If you have your High Definition Picture Settings on the STB configured to 'Auto' (and your TV "prefers 1080i content") or you have it set to '1080i', your television will always get a 1080i signal. That doesn't mean that the native resolution of the signal is in 1080i.

Based on my understanding of the satelite resources available to SkyTV here in NZ, ther highest native resolution is 720p. If you are getting a 1080i signal to your TV, you have your STB to thank for this, not the native resolution of the signal being provided.

Hi,

Sorry but you are wrong, if you do not believe everybody else set your STB to pass through. All HD via HDMI will be 1080i and all SD will be 576P

Just got to www.myskyhdi.co.nz click on High Definition, click that would be great, click on more about High Definition and read. I just do not understand why you do not believe every one? This is Geekzone.

However, just because "someone" mentions something on a forum, doesn't mean it is accurate... GeekZone or not.

Likewise, based on my personal experience with Sky customer services and theor own website, not everything from Sky themselves is accurate either!

Unfortunately, F1 is not in HD - yet

The $10 a month (TV3, 2 x movie and 2 x sport channels at this stage) only applies if you pay the $599 upfront.

Believe me, it is worth the investment

NASCAR gets shown in HD and it is great.

I think part of what might be thowing your off is you seem to think that 1080i has more information then 720p therefore needs more bandwidth.

The reality is that the bandwidth requirements are basically the same as is the amount if information. 1080i sends half the picture each frame. 720p sends the whole picture each frame.

Remember that you don't actually own the MySkyHDi
