Its a Pay TV service, but the common theme is that most dont like paying for thr content. For some, who like the content it is a good option, for those who dont have need to see their content, off course its not worth it.

Sky has competition, and its free. So for those who hate Sky, just admit that it doesnt meet your needs. When somehing doesnt meet my needs , I dont hate it, I just don't get it.

i'd happily pay money to subscribe to SKY and Rugby - if i didnt have to subscribe to 50 channels of crap and a bunch of other sports channels i dont need...

I'd also be happy to do pay-per-view just for rugby matches if they even offered that option.

They could have my money, but just not at the levels they offer right now.

I suppose they've thought about that and they make more money this way. If they did PPV rugby and tailored packages, I wonder how much they'd have to charge. Probably a lot of subscribers have Sky just for rugby, they'd lose all them and sell them maybe on average a game a week? So they lose $1000/year for 50 games per year, but maybe they get twice the number of people buying PPV, so what's that $10 per game? If I were paying $10 per game for rugby, I'd probably end up just forking out the $80/month for Sky startup+sports.

What are others' thoughts? How much would you pay to watch a single game of rugby/football/whatever and how many games do you think you'd watch per year? How many other people do yo think would do the same and how many regular subscribers do you think that'd cost Sky?

I'd like to be able to choose not to have sertain channels and be discounted on a per-channel basis.

Don;t know what I'd get rid of besides the Maori Channel (watched it for the first time ever when Tua fought - dreadful presentation), but I think I could save myself a few bucks with some judicious selection...

I Have had sky since 1999, Mainly for football and motogp/superbikes and the history and discovery channels. I've found that we are watching less and less tv these days. Sky movies are a waste of time. and if there was a reliable net tv option then i'd drop sky in an instant.

Yup - if I could watch reliable high quality EPL and champions league football, online for free or cheap, I'd probably ditch Sky too.

The OP stated that the purpose of the thread was to discuss who agreed with the statement 'Sky is not worth having anymore'. It has turned out to be a fairly good discussion on the worth or value of sky verses the cost of Sky.

Its not about knocking or hating. It is about discussing if people find sky to offer value for them. Some people say no, and state they don't subscribe or have just quit. Some say they find it offers borderline value, and that if the price increased they would quit. Others say it offers them value.

I don't see any hating or knocking, just fair, subjective assessments of value.

The more I read, it is more like - I want it, but I want it on my terms.
Well, Sky is a very successful business and the model they use works. In half of NZ homes and increasing, so it looks like it's worth having to most people until the numbers start going the other way.

i suspect that SKY will be harder to do without when the kids grow a bit older.... "dad, why am i the only kid in class that cant watch nickelodeon?" for now, i can do without

i'm hoping that FTTN/FTTH will bring new IPTV options that will help chip away at the sky monopoly and perhaps bring some of these channel options online on a per-channel subscription basis.

We got rid of it when we moved house and the new house didn't have a dish, I decided we didn't watch it enough to keep paying nearly $100/month plus they wanted to cahrge me $100 to move house!

It's hard to turn down when they ring with a free install and 6 months half price offer. I dare say we'll get it again one day. I wouldn't call it good value, but if you want it it costs what it costs and I don't have a problem with that. The problem I did have was once you got startup, it's almost silly not to get movies and sport because the incremental cost was not that great. Suddenly it all adds up and costs $1000/year or so.

These days we don't miss it all that much. At least we can get our Food TV fix when we visit the parents.

NickleOdeon was one of the MAIN reasons were ditched the whole thing. The kids were watching it instead of doing their homework....or anything.

When they asked why we ditched it we just said we love love them and don't want them to be stupid and fat and not know how to do anything.

They grizzled for a couple of days.....then got busy with other stuff. If you can't take the heat on this, you're screwed anyway as a parent. :-)

Sky is almost getting out of my reach now as the costs keep going up and the quality comes down. Perhaps wouldnt be so bad if we had more HD as I expected we would by now...
Just got to see the content the Aussies get for their bucks and it becomes obvious that our market is perhaps a bit small.

have you checked out Veetle , they broadcast in HD tv, they stream up to 1500kbs so if your lline can handle it , it looks really good. its beta at the moment but more and more people are using it

If you're keeping score, put me down in the "Sky definitely is worth having" column.

I need my Premier League fix (although my team was cr*p this year) and UEFA Champions League (although I hate hate HATE ESPN's coverage), as well as live rugby, cricket and, to a lesser extent, NFL.

We all enjoy movies in my house and will often sit down as a family with home made popcorn and choc-tops to watch something we didn't see when it was out at the cinemas.

My wife also loves Living Channel, and anything to do with property and decorating. You can guarantee if she was the last one watching, when I turn it on it's on Channel 8.

And my daughter loves Cartoon Network and Disney Channel.

And on top of that, we live in a very hilly area and get terrible reception on free to air TV. With Sky we get a great signal on the public channels too.
