Yep, ads are ads. with this anti ad need, Id love NO ADS anywhere, for everything. But fortunately, we can rely on the annual Briscoes sale to be on this week!

Fortunately there's Lightbox and Netflix so it is now possible to watch programs add free.

Wonder how much $ sky has lost in subscribers not paying for this reason versus add revenue?

People do not expect no ADS everywhere, but most people find it unreasonable to have content they've paid to watch to be interrupted, so paying Sky leaves one with a bad taste in their mouth.

Streaming HD beats Sky downloading SD to Sky box for On Demand every time on a good internet connection, which more people are getting access to.

Old decoder or new, shouldn't Sky be capable of making its devices work the way they are supposed to so people can at least use them within their design parameters? To take just my one example, why is Sky incapable of getting Sky Go to perform the way it is supposed to? Why, instead of fixing that, do they waste time and money dorking around with pointless gimmicks like perks? Perks are not going to retain my business. A functioning Sky Go (along with a lot of other things) might.

SkyGo has been a dog from day 1. Sky should stop p'ing more money against the wall and just axe it. Then no problem for you or anyone else that it doesnt work properly for.

And get rid of Prime too. If TVNZ struggles to make a profit, Mediaworks makes a loss then Prime must be losing money too, so why bother. Just play sports replays and highlights. Add a bit of news and run promos the rest of the time. There arent any eyeballs watching it anyhow so why bother with the programming.

I've never had an issue with SkyGo. Admittedly its a little crap, but for when I need it, it works (during the America's Cup I used it on my commute and it didn't give me any issues).

For what you are wanting to do, Sky actually has a very good solution, but because of your outdated setup and your refusal to let Sky update your decoder to the version everyone else is using, you insist on complaining about the other solution. The Sky OnDemand on the STB works very well (I have used it a couple of times, and it was fast, and the program downloaded to the box so I could start watching in about 60 seconds).

Perks are OK too - I like $10 movie tickets. I have used them a few times now.

I am looking forward to the day when it is gone so I no longer have to consider it an option for anything. I'm glad Sky Go works okay for you. I wish it worked on the rare occasion I want to use it. I wasn't even complaining so much, just expressing my wonderment that a company that is losing subscribers in a changing competitive environment seems to think perks matter more than maintaining basic services. Given your poor internet connection by your own admission, is it not much more likely it's YOUR end rather than Sky's that is the source of the issue? They had some teething issues initially (Like any other new platform) , but I have used SkyGo a Dozen times in the past while and never had a problem more significant than any I'd have with NetFlix. Admittedly my internet connection is pretty quick and stable.

My internet connection has actually been better lately but the problem I have with Sky Go is that some (not all) of the on demand programmes simply won't load. Some seem to work normally, some not at all. Naturally the ones that don't work are the ones I want to watch. What normally happens when you click on something is that a big loading circle appears in the middle of the screen and you also see the media player progress bar and playback controls pop up at the bottom of the screen. I get the player controls but no loading circle, just a blank screen and nothing else happens, regardless of how long I wait or how many times I hit the reload button. It just sits there forever and never does anything. If I try a different channel, or live play, it sometimes works. It seems completely arbitrary. I have also tried this with different browsers on different computers with the same result. Streaming from other sources usually works fine.

You don't pay for TVNZ or TVNZ on demand. So ads are what you have to put up with as the price of watching it.

As has been said about Sky, the issue isn't ads per se. If Sky was free I would have no issue with ads. The issue is there are people who are paying north of $100 per month, and still getting their programming ruined with ads, when competitors to Sky manage to offer viewing ad free for a fraction of that price.

As I and others have said repeatedly, it's reasonable to be subjected to ads on a free service, but not on an expensive premium-priced pay service. And Sky is well and truly premium priced compared to other providers.

@tdgeek - Just out of interest, and in the interests of disclosure given your strong support for Sky in this thread, do you work for or are you otherwise connected to Sky?

Im not sure Sky has as many ads as TVNZ. Being FTA isn't relevant. Sky has ads, some for their services, some as standard ads. Its a revenue stream, that reduces costs.

How can you decide that Sky is well and truly premium compared to other services? The north of $100 you mention includes Sport. The other services which I assume are the $14 Netflix or Lightbox, do not have well and truly premium sport. So thats the typical comparison, Sky at $100 to Netflix where you can watch old TV shows and old movies for $14.

I dont work for Sky. There are others here that have "strong support", but thats actually false. I have Sky, I gave it up when we moved house as this place didnt have a dish. I got it installed after a year. It suits me, it has value to me. Its not cheap. But I am not a Sky supporter, and like the others here, its actually correcting the anti Sky sentiment. Show me where they rort the customers, then I will jump on the anti Sky bandwagon. As with most businesses it has revenue, expenses and profit.

If Sky ditched sport and played old movies and TV series, or like Lightbox, a smaller number,but more modern TV, guess how much Sky would cost? $14

Two totally different animals.

Netflix = Old TV and old movies, plus a few originals (which is misleading, they just have the rights)

Lightbox = TV only, smaller range but more up to date

Sky = Sport

Should Sky remove the sports subsidy, then Basic and Neon would complete with NF and LB. Maybe Neon and Basic would combine to one service, time will tell.

Eventually the price offered by those two parties was insufficient for Sky to bother onselling the FTA replay rights - Channel Nine (which owned Prime) decided that throwing good money after bad didint make sense and had the choice to either sell or close Prime. That gave Sky the opportunity to have an outlet for FTA replay rights and the opportunity to advertise its product (at a time when the other FTA's didnt want to let Sky advertise on their channels).

Arguably the FTA replays could still be shown on Prime and/or offered for free online via SkySports website or even free on FanPass (although there would be a cost via Neulion), just chop out the other dross (which costs money to buy and cant be cost neutral on advertising in a declining viewership market). The rest of the time could be filled with the Sky preview channel and infomercials.

Prime no longer makes sense. Not that it really did anyway.
