Davy:

Wow, you're right about that! Game of Thrones on SoHo has appalling image quality. I'm going to be getting rid of it if things don't pick up soon.

Are you referring to the HD stream??

No, the standard stream and it really is poor quality. I wasn't about to pay twice for getting SoHo in proper HD, but now the image quality is so poor that it's a distraction during the show.

I've never watched a Sky SD channel in years because of the vulgar quality and wouldn't have Sky if they had no HD. I don't really see how you can complain though if you won't pay to improve things.

Perhaps you should read the thread Is HD ticket worth the extra 10 bucks?.

I hope that you dont partake in either the movies or the sport channels as they would be equally as unpalatable to watch.

Think he is (rightfully) suggesting it's not right to have to pay for SoHo and then ALSO an HD ticket... Thus implying SoHo should be in HD by default?

Yes, by any standard of reasonable customer service, if you pay extra to receive an additional channel, you should expect to receive that channel in a suitable quality to view - not degraded to the point that it is virtually unwatchable.

But this is Sky we are talking about, so any discussion of expecting reasonable customer service is probably not relevant.

I don't think it's too much to expect for the premium packages to be HD by default, since you're paying extra for them. That means Sport, Movies, Soho, and whatever else you have to shell out extra to get (like Box Office).

So increase the price of Basic by $10/month - and disadvantage everyone that doesnt have HD?

Or split it and increase Soho to $15/month and Sport/Movies by $5/month (but offer a discount of $5/month if you subscribe to both), like Sky UK?

Once the new box rollout is complete they can do that since everyone will have the ability to get HD on the supplied hardware.

God forbid that a retailer should offer TV and movies in SD.  And shame on the retailer that lets the customer buy it in SD - what poor customer service that would be.

And god forbid that Netflix should have an SD offering (and give customers the option of downgrading from the old US$8.99 HD package to a SD one rather than wear the price increase).  Or that iTunes and Apple should even offer SD content to buy or rent.  Shame on them.

Any idea as to HD TV penetration in NZ?  In the US its about 80%, UK it was 76% in 2015, Australia claims 95% (but their definition of HD used to be 576p and I dont know if this has changed).

There is SD, and then there is Sky SD.

The rugby I watched on a friend's 55" was sub SD, harking back to the early days of youtube. Disgraceful.

How about Sky just eats it and upgrades the quality with no price increase to the customer? What a novelty that would be!

I personally think SoHo should be part of the Basic package (at no extra cost). Paying an extra $10 for it - why?

I guess they pay extra rights for the content? Having said that its very little content compared to any SVOD service, comparing content of them to Soho

Sky must alter things as discussed in this thread, and those things have to make it more desirable, Soho being in Basic would help that.
