While I am not against a reasonable fee to upgrade to what looks like a 1 TB drive, I absolutely refuse to pay an ongoing monthly fee for this. I have asked sky how they are justifying this charge, but don't really expect an answer.
Most of what I watch is on tv 1, 2,3 and prime. I do have the sports channels, but I can get motogp from there website streamed live, for a reasonable fee. so if sky want my $900.00 a year they need to do a bit more than offer me rip off deals.

I totally agree with you.

Considering the value of the NZ dollar this is nothing but price gouging.

We do have choices....and hopefully one day we see competition to make even more choices.

Shame on you Sky for ripping off your valuable customers who are already paying top dollar. It would be too much to guess that many more channel are going to be available in HD to make use of the TB drive...haha

Yup, so if you paid the $599 upfront at the start it is $149 to upgrade but if you rent it it is only $99 to do exactly the same thing!

but you forgot the increase in monthly fee from $15 to $20 if you didn't pay the $599 up front

I don't pay monthly so it doesn't apply to me.

I think Sky are now giving the people who rent a choice. You can have MySky HDMi for $15 per month or you can have the MySky Plus for $20 a month.

My problem is I paid the $599 upfront at the start on the understanding they still own the decoder and will fix faults and keep me uptodate with the latest technology. I get paying something for someone to come around if they need to, my last upgrade cost $49 as the the MySky HDMi decoder needed a new cable to be run. But why are they asking $149 from me to upgrade to MySky Plus but only $99 from any new customers or existing customers who rent their MySky.

And don't forget that the raw cost of the technology will have also dropped, so that the 1Tb units likely cost them less than the 320Mb units... and by the time you take into account the NZ dollar they must be costing them significantly less... Going to be good profits at Sky this year!

I think I will wait for install prices to come down a bit before upgrading my myskyHD.

I didn't realize how well I had it in Canada with ExpressVU (and I loathed ExpressVu). Even Bell ExpressVu enabled their STB's usb ports for free and allowed the customer to hook up an external HD for more recording space. Bell also only charges $5 /month for up to 4 more STB's in the house (not $5 per stb...$5 for 4 stbs in the house) and sky charges 25 bucks per stb?

Oh well..I didn't move here for the TV....but wow!

Yeah it is a shame we get charged so much here. We have myskyHD in the lounge and pay for one multiroom for master bedroom split off into daughters room. But now that the kids are older, my son wants sky too and paying another $25 for another box seems outrageous.

Wondering if the extra cost is worth it to stop them fighting over channels in the lounge. Cuz then I could send both of them to their rooms to watch sky on separate channels.

After moving here and buying a house......

I was all excited to get Sky HDi! Thinking ahhh this is going to be great, can finally record some shows (upgraded from the basic stb).

I had the basic Sky stb when we first moved into the house. Eventually was ready to upgrade to HDi. Called Sky up....they inform me of $120 install fee....I said ok, yep when can he be here, scheduled a time.

Install guys shows up removes the old box and puts in the SkyHDi...has to handle 4...maybe 5 wires? 5 min work max? And I got charged roughly 120 bucks..I just started to laugh....I laughed at the install guy and said you gotta be kidding me and gave him the money.

I have installed/pointed many Sat things back home, had to find many birds up there from Dishnet, Direct TV, Bell, and Shaw bird. From making my own Jtag cable to flashing tsops on stbs, to replacing a bad hard drive in a stb box (took hours to find tsop software versions and married the drive to the box).

I started to notice a couple of things as the guy was hooking the STB up....looking at the remote. I asked the tech where is the skip ahead or back button? His response.....a what button?

I started to laugh...I was like ....thinking to myself you have to be kidding me....no freaking skip ahead or back button. Now I am left wondering when I can pay $5-$10 a month for a remote that has skip 30sec back or 30sec forward button =S

Then I noticed how much Breakfast TV recording takes up for space...I nearly crapped my pants and once again started to laugh...was like 9%

Man how spoiled I was in Canada...I am/was a BeyondTV and SageTV user. I think I will eventually have to start looking into FTA boxes in NZ and MythTV or some other PVR/HTPC software.

I guess the difference between a monopoly and a dualopoly is skip back/forward buttons and external usb for extra recording time

Since I'm moving shortly it might be a good time for me to upgrade the MySky SD box to the new Plus box since I'll be paying for an install fee anyway - or will they charge me on top of that? (House I'm moving to doesn't have a dish)

I also have a MySkyHDi box (Multiroom).

How can you tell if you paid the $599 upfront?

I remember paying it for the MySky SD box (Billed the next month to my account) but I can't remember what I did for the HDi. I do remember paying the tech $150? COD which I thought was a bit odd at the time.

Does it show up on the statements? Mine shows HD Ticket & HD Credit

If you had silver one then they swaped for hdi, no monthly fee for box.

Hd ticket, credit just means you have multiroom.

I had the Silver and the basic one. I swapped the Basic one for the HDi and also kept the Silver so now I want to swap the Silver for the Sky+ box.
