Haha! There are 'standards' of sorts.. in that the new LNB you got is probably a 'standard' 40mm throat. The problem you have is Sky had to use a 23mm bracket (I think) for their dual throat. You can get replacement LNB holders pretty easily. In fact I see just the thing you need on TradeMe... only $2!!!
thanks tangerz, yes I measured it with some calipers, it was definitely a 'standard' 40mm throat, and that bracket was just what I needed to convert from the old dual LNB to the single LNB... I bought it.
Now where do I buy a f-connector rubber boot from? the inner diameter of the boot would be 16mm, and outer diameter of the boot would be 18mm.
dont worry, that would mean I have to re-clamp the f-connector too.. I don't have the tools for that, so I'm just going to jimmy the old f-connector boot into the new lnb, and silicon around it, to keep the water out.
yay I'm very happy now, I just gaffer taped the LNB to the bracket for now :) works mint! 96% signal quality, and all transponders are working with the new single LNB, and thats with splitters included!!!
Glad you got it going without having to worry about those outdated vertical signals! Pushing on the f connector and using gaffa tape should help it last for many days... Oh hangon the signals gon...
SBS 1+2, Nine digital, Go and Gem and great channels, and all on vertical. Why would you not like a channel because of the way it is broadcast? That makes no sense at all.
A little bit of a hassle with the time difference being ausy channels but that is what timeshifting and recording are for. IMO they are easily as good or better than the great majority of the unwatchable rubbish on Freeview (mainstream channels excluded).
hdinsider: Still can't work out why you didn't call sky to get them to replace the faulty lnb. Good for you doing it yourself though, great result! Well done.
lol, so they can give me a cheap replacement same old secondhand lnb, and charge me a visit fee, no thanks. For $40 bucks I like my 96% signal strength single LNB, and even in strong rain haven't had any signal fade yet. :)

its not because of the way its broadcast, its of what it does to the LNB, it switches the single LNB into a different mode (vertical), and therefore you can't watch ALL the other (horizontal) channels at the same time... which basically, plain sucks. Try to explain to your kids and wife.. sorry you can't watch Disney channel, nor TV2 (via freeview sat) because I'm watching SBS. ROFL, I don't think so.
Do you have a link to the whats-on channel guide for the above channels, I'll take a look at the lineup. probably just some outback jack, and neighbours. I'll take my amazing race, x-factor, sky sports, sky movies, discovery, disney, over outback jack any day!

yeah its still working perfectly, haven't been back up on the roof since.
low def makes me feel like I'm watching 0.3Megapixel tv. I like the 8megabit 1080p HD its very nice :) you can even see faces in the crowd in the background, watching SD the crowd is just a blurr of colours. the difference is massive. you can even see the difference in quality of the different TV cameras around the racetrack or around the rugby field. 1080p is out-doing even some TV camera men's recording gear :) hope they upgrade soon, such as V8 supercars incar cameras.

Fair point in theory but in pratice how often does this really happen? Once in a blue moon if ever cheifly becuase of the time difference, the prime time shows don't clash. Now yes, this also means that the prime time shows are on too late to make it practical to watch them in real time, but as I say, that is what timeshifting and recording are for. Add to this that most houses (maybe not yours?) have access to freeview|HD via the terrestrial broadcast and a clash like that is next to impossible.

Yeah there is a lot of crap on there especially SBS during the day, (BTW I would rather watch Turkish language news than watch mind numbing american drivel like x-factor!) These channels are the Australian equivalent of say TV2, 3 and Four or Prime, you can't really compare them to pay TV channels, and if you've got Sky then why the hell are you bothering anyway?
