If this is the case, then why no Formula 1 pass?! I paid $$$ last year for this and as mentioned earlier in the thread, would gladly pay $$$$ for it again this year but you've not given me the option. Which means you're missing out on my cash, and I'm missing out on Formula 1 - so we both lose! Surely there's something you can do here - especially as you had it working perfectly last year - so there's no technical barrier, only political I assume.

Or Bernie. Might be a case of shooting the messenger. If Sky could flick F1 to Fanpass at prices that suit you, or me, they probably would. Offer the service, being in the revenue. Fact is Sky has nothing to do with F1. Its like a dairy has nothing to do with Moro bars, they just sell them at the prices the Moro bar owner wants.

Actually they do they hold the rights for it in NZ. Last year they had an F1 pass (and Super Rugby & NRL) where you paid a set value (say $400) and got access to it all season and that was it. The great thing is it was also on demand, meaning if you weren't able to see it live you could watch it at another time that suits you (days later if you want).

I accept that Sky is running a business, but as someone who only purchases passes in that model (NHL.TV and Premier League Pass) they are missing revenue from me. The platform can handle it, Sky just choose to forego revenue and as a result I get my fix elsewhere.

For some reason sky is not offering on demand via Fanpass. Is this the technical reason?
The fact that it costs to much to be worth while at the moment?

I agree that they are missing revenue from me. I would have spent more with them overall if i could have got a season highlanders pass. I still used fanpass but ended up watching it elsewhere at times.

Maybe next year they'll offer it. Maybe not.

Ok, tell us all how the F1 rights are structured for NZ. How much are they? How much extra to add extra rights for Fanpass capability?

The question is, do you feel that Sky thinks, hey we can add more revenue, but no, lets not bother? Its a business, and like any business they want to add more revenue, so if they don't, it clearly is a cost issue.

FP isn't just a SS1-4 stream, it has on demand. You can watch OD for content that started in the last 24 hours.

I assume that if they got extra rights for "passes", that will be a cost formula, and not a per subscriber formula, which in a small country is likely to be difficult to recover costs, as there are over 800,000 Sky subscribers who can get get sport for $26 odd, and FanPass users, that leaves a small number of users. Theoretically what is left are not sport watchers. So the market for "pass" users will come from Fanpass and Sky subscribers.

No need for "uh". Off course they hold rights for F1 in NZ, we are talking about extra rights to make "passes" viable.

As they make the move from satellite to perhaps full SVOD only, I am sure that there will be many new options in play, pun intended. right now they are stuck with a high cost t deliver model, not their fault. It runs out in a coupe of years. Lower costs = more ability to tailor options IMHO

Hi Sherlock, (and others discussing Formula 1)

Our decision at Fan Pass taken late last year to move away from the Season Pass model (F1, NRL and Super Rugby) to the Sky Sports 1-4 option was made for a variety of reasons but at it's heart it came down to overall demand and our aspirations to grow the service. These passes were a great option for subscribers who were genuinely only fans of a single sport and were quite happy to forgo interest in other sports. However, we quickly found that although there were good numbers of people who liked this model there were many more who actually like multiple sports and wanted to watch the best sports that SKY has available on any given weekend or week.

The new model has allowed us to offer all the best sports SKY has to offer on Sky Sports 1-4 rather than only F1, Super Rugby and NRL (and we are hopeful of adding the Pop-up channels in the future) meaning that sports like cycling, golf, netball, cricket, darts, Champions League and many others have been able to be seen by Fan Pass users. It was unfortunately not cost effective or practical to run both models simultaneously for a variety of reasons. I understand that this has meant some compromise to service for some users and that not everyone is completely happy - especially some F1 Fans (we do still show all Grand Prix live though). We would love to be able to offer all the features of both services and we may get back there as we continue to grow but in the meantime I hope you enjoy what we do have.

As we are growing we have been able to introduce new products and features and I am pleased to let you know that we have just launched Pay-Per-View on Fan Pass (web only at this stage) meaning that people without SKY can now buy online access to pay per view events such as the Joseph Parker fight this Thursday. This is another big milestone for Fan Pass in terms of giving people the option to view sport on their terms and without being tied to a long term contract.

Thanks very much for the explanation - it makes sense that you'd get more interest in Sky Sports 1-4 in general rather than just specific sports like F1. It's a pity you can't offer both season pass style functionality AND streaming of Sky Sports 1-4 though!

I guess the new 24 hour playback feature makes F1 watchable at least (on the Monday morning after a race) - will this be available on your Android app or on Chromecast soon - as I used to use both to watch the F1 last year and was very happy with the service?

It is still a lot of money just to watch a fight of that grade on TV. I heard someone put $100 on JP to win at the TAB, and the total return they got back was just $1, which shows you how one sided it was going to be.
