I think it's a pretty admirable human trait to warn off others if you discover what you consider to be a rip off. Keep up the good work all.

Thats's the thing though, it's a individuals decision based on the value proposition. You 'discovered' a rip off and have to tell others, like they haven't evaluated this already.

My wife & I both watch sports a lot, and have HD netflix too. I don't like spending as much as we do (180 / month for Mysky with HD, sports, unlimited VDSL, HD 2 screen netflix) but we pay it to watch the sports we enjoy + comedy central, some discovery / Net Geo.

And if I pay 170, whats another $10 to have my sports in 1080i so I can actually read player numbers when watching.

Speculating that HD content potentially costs more for Sky to buy, it wouldn't really make sense to turn around and make the HD ticket free as well. A double price hit.

On a side note, the CEOs for both Sky TV and Sky City both seem like absolute weasels. Coincidence..?

Don't think its worth it. Don't think Sky is worth the money at all, which is why I stopped my Sky subscription nearly 2 years ago, have not regretted it for a second.

When I signed up for Sky I asked them what I would get with the HD-ticket, and was given wrong information. (They didn't tell me it was only for Sports and Movies, which I did not sign up for).

I don't think the HD ticket is worth it but I do require it to make sport worth watching. I'm 1 month in to my annual 3 month sky stand down.

HD ticket is definitely worth it. Covers Sport, Movies, Soho and The Zone.

Watch 3News at 6pm on TV3. Then watch it one hour later on TV3+1. See if you notice any difference.

Once you watch Sport, Movies and the likes of HBO programmes in HD, you won't want to go back. The extra cost is irritating though....

I was at a friend's house last weekend. We were watching the rugby on Sky. The picture quality on his new Samsung 55" was akin to watching 1970s VHS. It was shocking.

I asked him how much he was paying - in excess of $100 per month. Yes, he could pay the extra to access the HD feed, but he doesn't want to pay any more than he is at the moment. I reckon with what he's paying, he should at least be able to get a decent picture up on his TV.

He's a rugby fan, so has been reluctant to ditch Sky ... which is the only real hold the company has on many current subscribers. I suggested he go to the pub on a Friday, have a couple of beers, watch the game in full HD, and still be financially better off at the end of the month.

So you are saying the HD ticket is indeed worth it? (for the highest picture quality) Especially if you are already paying that much for Sky.

HD ticket is all that makes Sky a usable service currently on any modern TV. Once Sky switch all transponders to DVB-S2 H.264 the SD quality will improve but that could be a year away.

Wonder if as the roll out proceeds whether Sky will deliberately downgrade the PQ on the SD feed (Mpeg 2) to get people to go to the HD ticket??

I dont think they can drop it much more and still have text readable at least some of the time.

Surely the advertisers at sporting events want viewers to at least be able to recognize their brands, any lower and it will have the brands and players faces like they are blocked out intentionally.

The quality of the mpeg2 streams was downgraded in 1998, i.e., at launch.
