We are watching MAFS on 3 OD, the experience sucks. This is supposed to be the next best thing, but that app sucks. There are red highlights on some eps, why? Cant be the ones we viewed as those are not red. Why? Should I have to read a manual to find out on this latest and greatest thing?? When we FF thru ads that also sucks. I can use the ATV remote to skip 10 seconds or I can scroll but there is no image to see where to scroll to. Useless. For something that is not old fashioned, its pretty backward. Sky, I can see what has been viewed, I can choose to start where we left off or the start, I can see where I am scrolling. For an old fashioned system, its pretty flawless.

You bring up a fair criticism of OD apps, degree of implementation varies and each has a different layout which I guess some people hate. That doesn't bother me though. Being able to watch what you want and when is still better IMO. TBF I haven't used the ThreeNow app for a while (I pretty much don't watch Three at all. The content of their channel does not appeal in any form) but I quickly fired up 7days and it seemed fine. However, was it on last night? If so, it wasn't on there which is hopeless. I didn't see the red highlights you mentioned and didn't see any ads?

The playback is fine, but MAFS has ads, the issue is I cannot scroll accurately thru them. Fired it up, 7 Days, no red lines, so no idea why random MAFS has them on some eps. TVNZ also cant scroll except 10 secs at a time or scroll with no image. Same on LB, same on CuriosityStream but NF has scrolling images. LOL and no ads so little need to scroll!

I didnt get that it might or does support multiple in house streams.

I was looking particularly at the Sky-Q that is available on Sky UK. It has streaming capabilities and is marketed over there as a media hub in addition.
Since it has already been deployed there, it becomes less of a technology risk.

Well, you can't watch that until it's next broadcast and you remember to record it. That is where OD is better because I can discover content and watch it instantly. All OD services I have ever used have a rewind ability which is why I think we are misunderstanding each other.

And when you start watching it via OD its available almost instantly and as per all PVR recorded programmes has FFW, RWD, ability to select a starting point etc.

Ahhh cool. I guess the last time I played with Sky's OD it was a clunky, horrible experience through the decoder and I don't recall much content being available. That was quite a while ago though so I might look at again when I get a chance.

My viewing is generally:

Freeview/Netflix/YouTube/NeverThink (AppleTV): Enough content and I can easily add to my playlists during the day to watch later on the TV with Netflix and YouTube.

Sky Sport would compliment this nicely but I really don't want to pay for the entertainment content as that is just a waste of money in my situation and basic is pretty much what I already have but I would be charged $25 for it (as the real value of non-MySky/non-HD Sport seems to be $55 p/m). If they upgrade the Apple TV features on Fan Pass I'm pretty much in but I suspect Fan Pass will evolve into the mobile only offering they are talking about and that would kill off any hope of that.

For the others... ThreeNow: Pretty much never use as the content of that channel does not appeal. TVNZ OD: Use semi-regularly. ChoiceTV/HGTV OD: I like them but their OD isn't on the AppleTV so I usually just watch it on Freeview if I think too.

Sky. When this new upgrade occurs, they will have linear satellite, and SVOD. Will they set all content they have, on SVOD even though it has not aired on satellite/linear?

I have Sky, we have Freeview, so we are linear. Although we also have TVNZ/THREE/Lightbox/Netflix/CuriosityStream on OD.

But we don't watch linear. I could search forever on OD if I wan to watch something tonight, but linear has already given me that via series link for FTA and Sky. I am awash with stuff to watch, its all recorded but technically linear.

There is also very little I watch linear. I tend to record it and watch it later. Including Sky, which I tend to record and toss to my server until I have time to watch it.

It would be nuts for them to hold back programming from their OD offerings until it has aired on a linear channel. Particularly overseas content that has already aired offshore. They would gain no advantage from doing this, and all it would accomplish is to make programming accessed elsewhere - either parallel imported using VPNs or flat out pirated - more attractive relative to their offerings.

The also need to offer the OD product without in-program ads. Since they don't have to just re-transmit a live feed from elsewhere, they shouldn't have to deal with existing spaces for ads in the streams. If they are worried at the loss of revenue they could always have parallel offerings, where you get an OD bundle for $X with ads or pay an extra $y to get the same thing ad-free.

Most of the on demand stuff on the mysky ones are add free, just the catch up tv section has adds.

I like how how it downloads to the mysky decoder like a recording.

Just a shame SD picture, and I hear clicking noises in sound, yep other people here said they can't hear it, but it's only with Sky on Demand that I hear them, no clicking noises in Neon when had trial, or Lightbox or Netflix.

With Neon only had sound out centre speaker, but was using older chromecast, have Apple TV plugged in now, but not sure if Airplay from phone to Apple TV would give surround sound for Neon. i.e Sound from all Speakers like Lightbox even though it's not DD5.1, prologic does its stuff with Lightbox.

I think my personal view is pretty well summed up with this discussion. We each have a satisfactory answer to entertainment options, be it docos, tv shows or whatever but when it comes to sport there is only one place and one supported device to watch it on (legally).

I think some non-Sky customers would see it as part of their life if they were more flexible with sport but their strategy appears to not really change that and go after the non-sport customers they lost to other options. That's unfortunate for someone in my position but such is life. I just don't think Sky back themselves to compete with Netflix, LightBox et al. so they use sport to drive people to their service (they literally say that) and I think that is a major risk if they start to lose sports rights. Will that happen? Only Sky knows how great that risk is and I think they are in a position where they can't let the popular fringe sports go or might be slippery slope.

Super interested to see what the puck actually brings content wise and if sports will be available on it.

Agree. The idea here would be someone who pays a monthly fee to the documentaries for example would have access to a decent about of OD docos.

I don't mind if they offer both. As an example, in the Sky app the Discovery Channel would be streamed as live (no different to the satellite/linear version) complete with promos so you can just have it going in the background if you choose. However, on the same page is a selection of the Discovery Channel docos to watch OD (as well as being searchable in the apps global search). Could be quite expensive to stream all channels like this though but that is something I would like.

AS far as I can tell, the puck is just an STB. I dunno the difference between Sky and Non Sky in the presentation. Either way, the puck doesnt affect the content. You get a package and then choose MySky or puck or the companion app

Agree. I feel that they have to have satellite for now, as too many cant or wont go to OD. Its too hard, its too new, I just want the same as I have now. They predict 300,000 of this. Satellite should be at todays prices or similar. And please dont subside them by the OD people . Over time these 300,000 will migrate to the cheaper option, encouraged by friends and family and Sky. Then Satellite will probably be dumped, or there will be no free install deals.
