I wonder if the new sky box(upgrade from old silver digital decoder) will be able to determine where it is located. My mate 'Dave' takes his old grey digital decoder to his bach every now and then and that works fine. What if you where to plug the new decoder into and internet connection up there, would that show its not at its proper address? Easy solution do not plug into the network.. but i wonder...?

Nope, "Dave" is still free to move his box up to the bach like normal, internet data is only used for downloading content not for tracking where you are, plus SKY allows you to take the Skybox to a Bach provided there is a satellite dish

Does anyone know what kind of Sky card is in the new boxes? Is it the older NZ17 (gold) cards in the original digital Sky boxes or is it one of the new NZ45 (blue) cards used in the MySky boxes?

The NZ45 or NZ17 relates to a 8 digit code on the side of the card with numbers on it.

It is a blue card. There is no NZ45 or NZ17 sequence on it.

Warning for those with an old silver mysky box. You may be charged extra for the recording function when it is replaced with a new shiny box.

I had mysky HDi in the living room and used the silver mysky for the multiroom option. I called sky last week to confirm how much i would save if i gave back the silver mysky. I had paid the full $600 for this when it first came out so have not had to pay a monthly charge for that mysky box. I was told the saving would be $25 so off I went down to Mt Wellington this week to hand it back.
This morning I got my latest bill where they only reduced my monthly bill by $15. When I called up for an explanation I was told that multiroom got the HD ticket for free. I explained that this was not clarified when i called last week and that if i had known I might not have handed my box in if the difference was only $15 not $25. I asked them to reconsider.

After being put on hold for 10 mins I was told if I wanted to save the full $25 a month I would have to give up the HD ticket!

If I wanted the multiroom back I would have to pay $25 a month to get a new black box, the HD ticket would then be free again ( saving of $10) but if I wanted to be able to record on the new box it would cost me ANOTHER $15 for this option.

I couldn't believe it, so after receiving incorrect advice from SKY it was now going to cost me an extra $15 a month to get back the services I had 7 days ago. When I pointed this out they just said it is what it is and my old silver mysky box would have been replaced shortly anyway. So it appears that despite paying the full whack option for the mysky, when the box is replaced you will be charged more money for the same service. They didn't even seem bothered when I said that I was considering cancelling my Sky subscription but had decided to just get rid of mulitroom first but this service made me rethink about the whole service. It seems despite all the competition Sky still think of us a cash cows to be milked dry rather than as a customer with options.

If the family didn't love the ease of the mysky use and the soho/sports channels it would be an easy separation

I am in a similar situation, outvoted by someone who can't believe there are new and better ways of doing things. The underlying problem is that the convenience of a simple remote, along with other factors, has always outweighed all other considerations, including quality. As a result, we still have what is probably the oldest Sky decoder ever made, a Pace something or other with Scart connectors and analogue outputs. I have set it up with a Panasonic DVR that upscales s-video to HDMI for the Sony TV. Of course this is not HD, but no-one seems to notice the difference. I am not bothered because I never watch Sky anyway.

My question: When the New! Improved! model is forced on us, will the ability to record anything and everything be curtailed and will there be new or added charges for regular SD viewing?

If you want to record Sky programs through the Satellite, you will have to pay more for that option. Then Sky unlocks that recording option. Sky just passes through the Freeview channels in the resolution they arrive at Sky, so they told me. That's 1080i, for those channels in that resolution.

Can you run a ruler over the new decoder please? And note where its cooling vents are? My AV equipment is in a cupboard and it would be handy to know whether it will slot in where the existing (silver) digital decoder sits currently or whether adjustments will need to be made (not a simple task).

The height is measured from where it's feet touch the shelf, to the top of the box.

It is one big vent .. lol
At the rear, it has quite a few horizontal rectangular vents (small).
The sides and the entire top is a mass of small holes. I can shine a torch through the top holes and can view the interior.

The side and top holes are 2 mm in diameter and the top ones are in a grid of 30 x 16. Must be around 450 holes, I kid you not!

Yes that is a big help thanks. I am going to need to change the shelf spacing to allow for ventilation. Your measurements allow me to do that at my leisure.

What is the big deal about the new box?

What do I get that I didn't before?

As far as I can tell exactly the same content will be available, the difference being I can download it and watch it at a time other than their broadcast times - using my ISP data and connection.

Is that right?

If so, why the hell would I want it?

Actually there is a large back catalogue of content that has already been played, and in some cases, has never been broadcast at all. Think of it as the equivalent of the Lightbox library of content (and possibly more given the movie catalogue if you're a movie subscriber) that would cost you $13/mth to stream using your ISP and connection, that Sky is giving you access to for free (as part of your Basic package).
