Keen! Been looking for a legit alternative for a while now k... might have to turn off the switch after world cup though.. as someone noted, nothing beats the HD sports on a decent tv. Personally I'd much rather pay $30-$40 for just sports content from Sky rather than getting everything...

If thats the cost of their sports content, can't they offer it at cost+a premium alone as a new service?

I could get that for 48 on a deal for 12 months, when they have that. Sport holds me, but I could work round that if I have to. I like docos channels but dont watch that much. I know the deal with getting new customers, no issue with that, but half price of which I pay now and I get free movies on top, thats quite a huge gap. Cancel for 3 months and I am eligible. I expect that after the RWC competition might heat up, then there may be sioem hefty price adjustments

I agree, but if I was an existing customer, I would prefer they didn't offer any bribes to stay, so everyone is treated the same, and no one is getting special treatment. If they can afford to give some people it free for a period, then there must be a margin to allow them to do this, which means they could just reduce everyones fee by a bit, and not give anyone any special treatment.

The closest I have got to sky is an Igloo box, and when I did subscribe to the premium channels, there was literally nothing on it that I wanted to watch. But I would probably pay $30-$40 per month for sport on it, as long as it was in HD.

Do the maths:

The total number of Sky subscribers is falling.
The majority of remaining subscribers will not opt out (yet).
A minority will definitely opt out.
Another minority may opt out, and can be bribed to stay.
It costs Sky nothing to give 3 months "free" to this small undecided minority, as they would otherwise be providing service to them anyway, and Sky will keep a cash cow.

3 months? Carefully planned to miss the world cup rugby. So then you have to pay.

Will there be free to air rugby world cup? I doubt this time will have free to air for some matches.
Seem like gonna keep sky until the world cup ends. Unless switch to legit way of streaming? I guess no one in the household would like buffering during world cup.

It's possible someone like ESPN will have a stand-alone streaming package, as they did for the Cricket World Cup. If it makes it onto ESPN 1 or 2 then Sling TV at around $25 a month would be a good bet. Or UK's NowTV at £11 per week (or £7 per day for just the matches you want to view) might be better than forking out for Sky for the next several months.

I expect Prime will have delayed coverage or at least highlights.

Im with Sling TV at the moment - their sports package seems unappealing to the NZ viewer, but obvs depends on what your interests are. Doesn't feature much range - if any - of rugby, league, international cricket etc.. and being a US offering, is tailored to the US market so has a lot of ESPN + various regional offerings.

Had a look at NowTV earlier too - seems to be a skysport (uk) offering, which from memory doesn't have rights to some sports such as NRL etc as they're with BT sports. Cost wise a monthly charge of roughly $84NZD works just for the sports package doesnt stack up to 'hassle free' sky setup now imo anyway...

Might be easier to pay a 'subscription fee' to one of the bros in Aus and use Foxtels equivalent of SkyGO?

I really wish Sky would offer just the sports section of their service, streaming, for $35 per month or thereabouts. I think they'd pick up a lot of people who left because of their pricing, but still want to watch a bit of sport. They wouldn't have the cost of providing the tech, and if they're willing to offer the whole sub for $48, then it would seem a reasonable amount to charge.

Good tip. I suspect that's what OtagoLad was alluding to earlier, even though he didn't want to say as much. How many services/countries are there that fit this description:

"An official service in another country (which shall remain nameless) which has the official rights in that country for all the rugby (union and league from NZ, Aus, SA), football and cricket. this cost approx $25 per month..."

It pretty much points to Foxtel Play as you said. I suspect we shouldn't discuss this any further or we risk falling foul of the FUG.

OtagoLad has already named the service in a previous post - if you search the forums for "The Uptake of Digital Entertainment" you'll find it.

You can also find it pretty easily by looking up broadcast rights holders for Super 15 and NRL - it's not a big list.

Since I'm newish, can someone please explain why it is against the FUG to name the service? How is this any different to NetFlix?
